Anybody catch this month's Hot Rod Mag that has a preview of the new GM 6L80 trans? The article wasn't real big, but it did give some specs. IIRC, I believe there is a 4.06 first gear ending with a .65 overdrive. They went on to say that this trans is built to handle large amounts of torque (500ftlbs) and is engineered for retro-fitting into older models. It'll be interesting to see what model vehicles get this new product. Very cool...only about 10 years too late.......er.....maybe only 5 years.

On edit: This is not the talked about 6 speed Allison, or at least Allison wasn't mentioned, but an effort by the GM Hydramatic Division.

think they should have this out sooner also, that way some would be in boneyard. no they said gm took components from 4L60/4L80/4L85 line to make unit and save costs. that should make easy for electric control boxes for backfitting, like making a crate item.

The article says that it is a modular design and that this should allow multiple configurations in different applications....even older vehicles. That 4.02 first gear would be something I would like in my wife's 04 Sub. Maybe that would wake up the 6.0 around town driving.....not to mention what it would do for my 96 LT1 Caprice....:D

The 6.0 suffers from a LOT of de-tuning/torque management when starting out in 1st gear.

Try this....get up to 35mph or so....2nd or 3rd gear. Then mat the throttle. She'll kick down to 1st and snap your neck often times breaking the tires loose. Obviously there isn't torque management in the downshift. ):h

I'm still waiting! I wish GM would hurry up and get it out there, my 95 is getting some miles on it.
