Need Help...

Before we left Illinois for Florida, I had my truck switched over to Amsoil synthetics (eng/tran/diff). I also had a UNI air filter installed, and an Amsoil oil by-pass system. I drove the truck 100 miles each way to/from work before leaving, just as a test, and everything seemed ok. So, we hitched up the trailer and headed out...

The trip was mostly through cold weather-- even Atlanta was 39 degrees. Crossing into Florida at 70MPH, I noticed the oil pressure was 30 (normally 60), but engine temp seemed ok. Immediately pulled into a gas station and noticed oil dripping from the bypass plate which connects up where the OEM oil filter normally goes. I had to add 9.5 quarts to get it back to full!!! Thankfully, we made it another 150 miles to our RV campground.

Next day, truck started, then died after 1 minute and would not restart. Took the truck to the local GMC dealership, and they said there was air in the fuel line (no clue why, perhaps unrelated to the oil leak?) They also said that the oil leak was caused by a bad O-ring in the piece that connects up where the OEM filter normally goes. They hunted for a matching O-ring but (apparently) could not find one, so I had them disconnect and bag-up the bypass system and put the (regular) Amsoil filter on in the original (OEM) configuration.

I'm looking at the part as I type, and the O-ring is split for about 1/4 of the circumference. Any clue as to what might have caused this, and why it took at least 800+ miles before it happened? Defective O-ring? Bad installation? It doesn't seem like alot could go wrong. The only "difference" was that when we got into southern Georgia the outside temperatures starting going up significantly (from 39 around Atlanta to 70 around souther Georgia).

Amsoil is mailing me two new O-rings (free). I was thinking about leaving well enough alone and waiting until I get back home to have my mechanic reconnect the bypass system, but if its an error related installation, then I will likely experience the same problem (Note: My mechanic has had LOTS of experience, and is very sharp, and quite trustworthy-- he didn't "skimp" on anything, but its possible he made a mistake in this case). I wouldn't mind having it done down here in Florida, but the last thing I want is a repeat on a LONG trip back home! We'll be here for a few more weeks...

Thoughts? Note: I'm not that familiar with mechanical lingo (engine parts, systems,..etc.).

Thanks,
Paul.

Did you get my last email? Never heard back from you. Is the mudflap in good shape?

Sorry to hear about your bad luck lately.

Hi Tony: Well, one of the slots in the top of the mudflap has been... expanded somewhat. :) But I think its repairable. In the back wheelwells I have bars/plates about 1inch wideby 1/8" thick, running from the frame of the truck across to the wheel well, and the flaps are connected to that bar (very sturdy). What I'm thinking about doing now is connecting another bar in FRONT of the flap, and running several bolts through, then spraying it over with rubberizing material. In other words, not just running bolts through the two slots, but several across the length of the top of the mudflap(s).

I never did get an email from you on the prices, or if it was possible to order just one mudflap. I REALLY like the Cloud Riders you sold me. If my experiment doesn't work out, I'll still want to order another (or another set), so let me know...

Thanks,
Paul.

Sounds like a defective "O" ring. I would get amsoil involved more. Make them aware that you want any possible engine problems warrantied. You were completely out of oil if the pressure starting dropping.

Paul, mine failed exactly the same way shortly after installation. Lost about 3 quarts of oil. I called amsoil tech rep, and he sent me a gallon of oil free for my trouble, as well as gave me a couple o-rings. My theory as to why this happened? Either it was overtightened, or a small piece of dirt or grit was in o-ring channel or both. O-ring split over about a 1/4 of circumference just as yours did. To this day, I refuse to trust it. I carry a spare OEM oil filter and a case of oil at all times. Edited by: jeephauler
