: Please Tell Me Not All Programs Are Like This
BlackCrewCabDuraMax 10-04-2005, 09:43 PM Ok the here is the deal. My first brand new vehicle and I barely afford it. I DON'T WANT TO SCREW ANYTHING UP!!
I went to a local dealer and had the Bully Dog trial downloader installed. I was told that the tranny had to "learn" the new setup or some such.
What did I get. A truck with a much more pronouned rattle, TONS MORE SMOKE THAN STOCK, and a transmission that acted like it was trying to kill itself.
I made the 30 minute drive home, and stopped and took off at various stages of agressiveness (never got on it hard as I was afraid for the transmission) about 10 times, hoping the trans would adapt and it never did.
I could definately tell it had more power.
Please tell me not all programs will cause tons of smoke, loud ratteling, and a haywire trans. What is the my SAFEST option?
Very disapointed
IdahoRob 10-04-2005, 09:57 PM Run it stock and unplug your computer:D
turbo-max 10-04-2005, 09:59 PM if all that worries you... leave it bone stock and be happy...plus this... Ok the here is the deal. My first brand new vehicle and I barely afford it. I DON'T WANT TO SCREW ANYTHING UP!!
BlackCrewCabDuraMax 10-04-2005, 10:02 PM That's nice. So every option is like this?
Smoke I can deal with. But the trans thing, and the extra noise is out. No way I'd put my truck through that.
Max Power 10-04-2005, 10:07 PM It takes more then 10 shifts for the tranmission to get used to it. If you know someone with a tech 2 you can ask them to reset the transmission tap cells and that will speed up learning.
There are lots of tuners out there that won't smoke. The edge/attitude hardly smoked at all on my truck.
I had the same complaint as you with the bully dog, way too much timing rattle. I suggest you try edge/juice, edge EZ or predator. None of them have any additional timing rattle at all.
GTA23109a 10-04-2005, 10:35 PM If you want a fairly seemless program, try the Predator, put it on the 40hp "Tow Tune" and leave it be. That tune is pretty dang mellow and drives very nice. I'm a big Edge fan too, but after running both back-to-back (and even stacked) for quite a while, the Predator is growing on me more and more.
McRat 10-04-2005, 11:35 PM Probably the best behaved LLY tune on a bone stock truck is the TTS LLY Tow. It is not the cheapest, or the easiest to buy, but acts just like the factory program but with 20% more oats.
I'd also borrow a Edge EZ and try it, or a Predator on low.
I had much the same impression of the Bully Dog LLY when it was first released.
My daily driver is the TSD (triple stack of doom). PPE+2/VA/PPE Boost Controller. Actually very well behaved for the power level. You'll need a trans though. ;)
Kennedy 10-05-2005, 01:12 AM The good tunes do not do this. Some seem to get overzealous in timing and fueling with their programs. A simple Edge EZ or Diablo Predator is my best suggestion.
Also, some dealers can get carried away trying to impress a potential customer. It is best to keep the tune mild at first and work up to the bigger tunes.
Max Power 10-05-2005, 01:16 AM I agree with Kennedy. They probably though in a really high performance tune to try to get you hooked. Knock your socks off with the power so when it drops off you will really notice it. The downside to this is your transmission will shift really bad until it learns and you will get lots of timing rattle especially with bully dog tunes.
You will probably be a lot happier with any of the tuners mentioned above.
LarryJewell 10-05-2005, 08:15 AM I run the bullydog stacked with the edge and I dont notice a bad timing rattle. Its currently being run with the bullydog in level 3 and the edge on 3/5. it runs real smooth. I have no complaints except that I want more power.
Max Power 10-05-2005, 09:53 AM You are in Texas. You will see more timing rattle the colder it is.
scottdiesel 10-05-2005, 01:51 PM I have similar concerns. I have the Edge EZ harness box. No rattles other than stock, a little more smoke than stock on level 2, maybe a touch louder than stock and has transmission protection. Switch levels on the fly from inside the cab. $318 from Diesel Performance Parts (a website supporting vendor and nice folks). EZ can be installed in 10 minutes and removed even faster if you have to take your truck to the dealer for service. I'm sure you'll be happy with the EZ.
Programmers (Predator, Quadzilla and so on...) can be detected by GM, even after you restore the stock settings, and they will void your warranty.
You will not get better MPG with the Edge EZ on a LLY, Edge only claims increased MPG with the EZ on a LB7 engine.
HSTER 10-05-2005, 04:28 PM I run the power pup and it is noisy for about 10 minutes , but does run and shift nice and has good power. Then i tried the tripple dog and i got the same eratic shifting.I tried all levels , driving easy for a while but never got any better.Bully Dog told me there wasn't any real difference in programming from the power pup to the tripple dog, but i sure can't explain why it runs so different.
McRat 10-05-2005, 04:33 PM There are a lot of folk on this board who have tried the LLY Bully Dog, and went with other tuners.

So what do I need to do to remove traces of this? Once the program is gone can I reset the computer somehow?
The Edge EZ sounds good, and is in my price range. The folks at the local shop said that the underhood modules aren't durable because of heat and whatnot. Any truth to that. Probably just BS.
Anyone else have experience with the Edge EZ. (I'll search in the meantime as I've seen many threads about the EZ)
My biggest concern right now is removing ANY trace of this program from the computer. I wish I wouldn't have done this now.
fredw 10-05-2005, 05:28 PM the guys i know that are running the powerpup for the lly have stated that their is timing rattle when cold, but once up to normal operating temp the rattle is gone, and the mileage gain makes up for the rattle, tranny shifts great tho, might want to give BD a call and see what they say, have you reset your tranny with the programer, what tune are you using
today i had a ride in a lly with the westers 170 tune, seamed real strong with no loud noises or excessive smoke

BlackCrewCabDuraMax 10-05-2005, 05:38 PM The guy said it was like a 70 HP tune. It was the free trial tune. The trans is getting used to it. (it's still there today on the way home from work)
Definately louder than stock. It makes the truck sound like a early 90's Cummins. Loud ratteling (compared to stock).
I think after reading posts on this board that the EDGE EZ is my best choice and probably the one I'll end up going with.
My question now is will this trial tune leave any trace it was there in the computer, and what can I do to get rid of it?
If You Can Barely Afford It!! Its Sounds Like The Bully Dog Is Your Second Mistake!!
Arm
BlackCrewCabDuraMax 10-05-2005, 05:56 PM What doesn't everyone piss and moan about the payment?
I can afford the truck. I just wanted to stress I CAN'T afford to screw it up.
I didn't buy any B/D product. It was there FREE download tune.
After more reading I'm leaning towards the EDGE EZ. I need to do more research, but from what I can tell almost nobody has a bad thing to say about EDGE products.
Wolford 10-05-2005, 07:55 PM I have had the EDGE Juice for the past 36000 miles and have no complaints what so ever. It is a very good product.
Wolford 10-05-2005, 07:56 PM Oh I should add that the Juice is a step up from the EZ power wise other than that they are pretty much the same.
chp777 10-06-2005, 02:49 AM i'm with wolford i love my edge/attitude it runs very nice more power but runs like stock on 3/5 setting just my 2 cents i even am stacked with a predator now and it runs great
bulitnv 10-06-2005, 10:41 AM I have 3000 miles onmy truck. I put the edge/*** on my rig at 2000 miles. It runs great, but at 2800 miles It developed a rattle. Quite a bit higher pitched than the stock rattle. Not sure if this is edge induced, timing, or what. It does run great though!
I s Bully Dog made by PPE?
turbo lcc 10-07-2005, 10:23 AM i'm with wolford i love my edge/attitude it runs very nice more power but runs like stock on 3/5 setting just my 2 cents i even am stacked with a predator now and it runs great
What settings on each?
BlackCrewCabDuraMax 10-09-2005, 04:45 PM I think B/D may be building other folks stuff. ACCEL and Granateli are definately farmed out to B/D. Just look at them. Especially the monitors.
