: hookem up?!?

Dmax05

My old AG teacher wants to hook our trucks up and pull. He drives a 2003 or 04 cummins cc long bed, and its all stock, and my signature says what I have

How should I set up my truck? I was going to put it in 4low, 1st gear and chip all the way up for more torque.

We will most likely pull on concrete.

anything helps!! Thanks

He will pull you around like a toy. He has the weight and traction advantage. Power is not an issue until you have the traction to put it down.

Add weight. Lots of weight.

Dmax05

thats why I am asking for all the help I can GET!!! I am scared! lol

Do I have an advantage in anyway?!

please!!!

And I cant back out because I was talking sh*t about the cummins and I bet him $100 already too!

Max Power

You have no advantages as far as I can see. You will need tie rod sleeves so you don't bust your tie rods as well. You should also air down your tires.

Hooking up in this fashion proves nothing.

vettelovralexand
10-03-2005, 03:12 PM
fill it up with fuel and get all your friends to ride with you. get the tie rod sleeves as suggested and air your tires down. get a 500gallon water tank and put it in the bed and fill it up. You'll get him then...

DuckhunterInTN
10-03-2005, 03:21 PM
I have never personally hooked bumper to bumper, but I heard that if you can hold your brakes and let him start spinning first (aka lose traction) then you can get on it and pull him all over the place.

You might actually be better in a high range or even on a lower power setting or something b/c it would be less likely for you to break the tires loose. I would think that having it in low range on max power would make for a pretty touchy pedal. You'll have way more power than you do traction no matter what the power setting you put it on.

countrycoach
10-03-2005, 06:22 PM
DuckhunterInTN is correct. Another thing to do that will help is go buy you a BIG drop hitch. Turn it upside down where it is actualy higher than the bumper now and hook. That will have him pulling down on your truck and you are pulling up on his. Also take some Square steel and jack the truck up and place between frame and axle. This will keep your suspension from squating and taking that advantage of higher hooking height away. Don't air down your tires too much, a radial has a tendency to buckle up in the middle with too low of air presure. and if you don't have the tie rod sleeves... don't even think about it! You will snap a tie-rod and most likely break a front axle.

Dmax05
10-03-2005, 09:01 PM
I dont have tie rod sleeves...the idea about letting him spin first is really good!...if I just do that then I could probably take him without tie rod sleeves right?
what power setting do you guys think I should run???
thanks

10-03-2005, 09:45 PM
: this sounds like a reciepe for disaster for both , these types of things prove nothing but who can break something first, hook a big trailer up and go find a 7to 8 degree hill and time each other at a set distance , this will prove alot more about power , ..or you can always drag race him:grd:

Dmax05

he has the automatic tranny.

So then my best bet is to stay 100% stock, hold my brakes until he spins his tires and then start to slowly pull in 4low??? basicaly the chicken **** way?!

what surface would you recommend we pull on?? We had planned to pull on concrete or asphalt.

we dont have any 8%'s around here...maby a 5 or 6% grade at the most.

when it comes time to hook up I will have a buddy take some pics for you guys.

Max Power
10-04-2005, 01:04 AM
You aren't listening. He has a LOT more weight they you. You WILL lose. You NEED to add weight. No doubt about it.

You NEED tie Rod sleeves. If you do not have tie rod sleeves you WILL bust your tie rods. This will leave your truck undrivable and will be the laughing stock of your class. DO NOT attempt this without tie rods. I can't stress this enough.

McRat
10-04-2005, 01:11 AM
Put lots and lots of weight in your truck. Then put some more in.

If you do not have good parts in your front, don't bother with 4wd Lo. You'll just bust something on pavement. Suggest you pull on the dirt instead. Throw a heavy blanket on the chain, so if it snaps, it will reduce the chance of somebody getting killed. Drop your swaybars all the way down.

Get someone to video it. They are often pretty funny.

Oh, and put some more weight in your truck.

countrycoach
10-04-2005, 10:48 AM
What they said, here is the ingrediants:

Tierod sleeves
LOTS of weight
high hitch point
lowerd torsion bars
slightly lower air pressure
block the rear suspension
and did I say tie rod sleeves? lol

With all this done you can prob drag him around like a puppy!

Leadfoot
10-04-2005, 11:06 AM
I would say that is the most important thing you can do. There is a video on the web of a nylon snatch strap (much lighter and safer than a chain) blowing out a tailgate and rear window after a failed recovery (not pretty). A chain would be much worse. Remember the chain may not snap, but if a hitch breaks (which I have seen MANY break and it has been documented here by others) then that becomes a lethal projectile for ANYONE in the surrounding area.

Sorry, just thought the point was worth re-emphasizing......:Nothing_f

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Throw a heavy blanket on the chain, so if it snaps, it will reduce the chance of somebody getting killed.

AndrewFessler
10-04-2005, 11:40 AM
DITTO TO ALL POSTS!!

Add weight
add sleeves
and for the love of Beer, put a blanket on the chain!

You can run your edge in maybe level 2, in the event he is chipped and you do not know. You do NOT want to over power and go WOT. Once you lose traction, game is over!

Ok weight...sleeves....and WEIGHT!! I got it...where do you get sleeves?? I can get LOTSA weight easy (I know lotsa fat girls!) Lmao!

Sleeves www.superdieselperformance.com Ask him to overnight them I guess if you want them before the weekend.

He is gonna make you look silly. Look at all that stuff you have to do just to even think of being a challenge to him. Holding the breaks won't guarantee anything, in a video i seen an f-350 vs ram 2500, the ford held his breaks and still went backwards. Get a video of this, should be interesting.

Dmax05

ok here is the plan...get some sleeves, chip to about level 3 (EDGE) 4low, 1st gear or 2nd (not sure yet) and go balls out....should be good?!? (dmax thinks to himself...this is a bad idea..why did you have to diss on his cummins???) and finaly get my buddy to film this a$$ whoopin...sound good? what have I forgoten, or anything else I need to know??

countrycoach

If you "go balls out" you will loose very badly!!!!!!!!!! I repeat do not, under any circumstances spin your tires!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As soon as you hear his spin over then you nail the throttle. The first one who spins is going to be the first one to go backwards!!

Max Power

I would air down my tires a bit too for better traction. I don't know how much though. (Don't let him see you air down or he will do the same thing) Hopefully you have better tires then him. Also since you are equal weight you want all the advantages you can. As recommended earlier get a hitch custom made to pull from as high up as you can. Also the best place for the weights would be hanging off the front of the truck but if you can't do that put them in the cab and in the front of the box.

Does he have an automatic or a standard? You don't want to just stomp on the throttle because once your tires are spinning you are done. You need to ease into it and make sure not to break traction. Use your brakes to keep yourself from moving. If he starts spinning thats when you want get off the brakes and on the throttle at the same time so hopefully you can keep traction and pull him around.

If you are both at equal weight it all comes down to how the truck is set up, tires, strategy and the driver. It still doesn't prove which is mightier, the duramax or the cummins. A waste of tires and diesel IMO.

McRat
10-06-2005, 11:52 AM
I disagree with some of the above.

First one to move has the advantage, and even spinning the tires produces a hell of a lot of thrust on concrete with a 7000lb 4x4.

I'd go in 4HI 1st, Predator on Kill, powerbrake to 2100+, and launch hard. You most likely have superior HP, so use it to your advantage. Go 25 PSI on the tires. If you get the "move", you will drag him backward at 25mph in a couple of seconds. The initial shock of the launch will break both truck's tires free, but the forward motion will be in your direction.

Yep!! We should start a poll! :D I think he is going to get drug backwards for negligent driving and in result of being drug and negligent driving he will break a tie rod, which in turn is going to ruin a cv shaft or two! If he is lucky he want twist a driveshaft or throw a u-join! -:t

McRat
10-06-2005, 01:39 PM
Oh, show up with your rear blocked. Pull out the rubber stops, get some 6"-8" long pieces of 4x4 (measure gap, then add 1") with holes drilled through them, jack up the rear, put the blocks in, lower it, then zip tie the blocks to the axle. This will keep the engine torque from making the rear squat, and lowering your hitch point. Costs $1, takes an hour at most.

Dmax05
10-06-2005, 01:55 PM
I am not gonna pull with out sleeves.
alright...anyone have pics of what McRat is talkin about?
thanks

McRat
10-06-2005, 02:07 PM
Get under your truck. Look at the rubber bump stop. Remove it, and replace it with a longer piece so there is no suspension travel. It doesn't matter what you use, or how you do it. I use a (2) pieces of 4x4 cut to the same length, with 2 holes drilled in them sideways so I have a place to thread zipties in. You only need the zipties to keep the blocks in place in case of overtravel. When you jack up the truck, do it by the hitch, not the axle. That way you can put in a longer block so when you lower it, the block is held in place by the weight of the truck.

OH...trust me there will be a video! win or lose

countrycoach
10-06-2005, 05:31 PM
It depends on how long you make the blocks. I wouldn't but the blocks to make it too much higher because you will be putting undo stresses on the drive line. cut them so once you let the truck back down on the square tubing it will seat back level or whatever stock was. That way he want know any better either!

I think he was at a disadvantage from the get-go, mainly being cummins vs. duramax. Even if both got traction, it would have been tough to pull even a stocker, since all they make is torque. I have seen duramax's put up torque numbers that cummins guys would laugh at. But the d-max is good to race, i guess, if that was its point in the first place. Is that why we drive diesels?

I got the fix. Slip a Chev skin over a Dodge truck and pull on equal terms. If this guy knows anything about what he's doing, he will break you truck and you pay. I drive an old 96 3500 Cummins, and the only thing it won't pull grows roots. If I were you, for the sake of you truck, back out. It will be considered fear by some, but wise by others. It's your pocket that pays.

For all of those here that still think it is a power issue and not a weight/traction issue. Here is my story.

My friend had a 99 cummins ext.cab short bed, another friend with a rusty 84 chevy with 35's and a beat up old 350. Guess who won.

The cummins spun the tires and the ol chevy towed him all around. END of story. Pulling another truck proves nothing in the way of power/torque. As some others have said the only true test is pulling a trailer the same distance and timing it, or drag race.

For those of you who still think it is a power/torque thing, come on over and I we will hook up in the dirt but I will use my tractor. Less power, lil more weight, lil bit different tires.

i've pulled a few dodges and fords in my day i dont have tie rod sleeves. first thing is to set a weight limit and a hitch height. that way there is no cheating then lower ur torsion bars as low as they go this will help traction and avoid tie rod breakage, if u get to add weight put as much as u can up front, put the chip on about 40 or 50 hp put it in low and hold the brake until he spins use the two foot driving method and when u hear him spool up or spin try to pull him easy with ur foot on the break if u spin or bounce ease out and hold the break

The thing is he is smart enough not to reply after you have treated him like an a$$.I could tell some very similar stories but don't because you wouldn't believe them without video's. Seems that until proven guilty don't judge so fast.

It's been a while since I was on this site, and it took awhile to read all 11pg's because I couldn't stand the bull s!!t all at once.
