With 4WDs, do you guys run chains on the rear only or on all 4 tires? Why?

Depends on what you are running in.

I hunt elk up in the southwest corner of Colorado in oil shale country. That is the worst muck!! Totally coats the tires with a layer about 2" thick until they are smooth. We make up special chains using cross chains for 18 wheelers. Then install them so they are really floppy! Keeps the mud (shale) knocked off the tires. Using regular tires chains and chain tighteners, they just get coated over and become useless also. I'll have to post a picture sometime! It ain't pretty, all that crap thrown up ALL over the truck.

I used to run them on a Jeep. I either ran all 4 or 2 on the front only.

Running them on the front gave the same advantages a front wheel drive vehicle has. It would pull the Jeep straight compared to running them on the rear. The weight on top of the front wheels helps a bunch!

I carry a set of 2. Sometimes just 4X4 & w/M+S isn't enuff. Case in point, late elk hunt SO CO after a blizzard ~ only the rigs w/front & rear chains could make it out. Don't like last rifle season but if I do it again, there will be chains for all the wheels.

Well that settles it for me. I need the ability to run chains on all fours, and to do that with 285s on 16x8s I'll need the 4" Rancho lift.
