I'm planning on getting a tuner and know I need to get a new exhaust. I was wondering if I really need an exhaust like MBRP or if I could just put a straight pipe on the truck.

Depends how cheap you are, and how loud you like your truck. Lots of guys run the mbrp without the muffler too, so it almost seems like a waste of money to me. You will get a ton of conflicting answers on this, as everyone has a personal preference. If possible find trucks with both and listen and look and see what you like.

I went with the straight pipe on my truck. Sounds good to me, loud but tolerable. I think like NAR said you will find different opinions. I would try to find a truck with exhaust and one with a straight pipe and see what you like best..

is there a real sound difference in going with a 4 inch exhaust? compared to a stock straight?

I just helped a buddy install a Silverline full exhaust on his 01 Dmax. We installed the muffler backwards so it is louder. It sounds awesome and is a great deal. Do some searching and you will find great prices on them. The 409 stainless looks nice. Silverline sells systems from the turbo downpipe back and it comes with a nice 5" dual wall straight cut tip. There is no cutting for a CCSB. Extended cabs and Reg cabs have 1 cut that needs to be made. It comes with an extension if you have a longbox. You can start by sending a PM to WIHuck. His shop sells Silverline. A lot of LLY owners will buy your stock downpipe from you and use it for a cat delete pipe. That is a good way to get $50-$75 back if you get the Silverline kit. Also, check into MBRP and Magnaflow. They both make good exhaust, but sometimes they cost more. Do some searching. You will find some excellent prices.

Silverline in my opinion. Turbo back T409 system with polished 5" tip from shopdiesel.com for $438.00 shipped to your door.

I found this in another thread. Contact some of the Diesel Place vendors. They can usually meet or beat anyones price.

We sell the Silverline systems for the LB7's for that very reason. It is actually a much better value than the MBRP in this case. For the LLY's though it is very beneficial to go with the MBRP due to the ease of switching out the cat. The Silverline systems include the front pipe and a dual wall tip for the same price as a cat-back tipless MBRP system.

BamaDmax,

If you tow heavy and plan some higher HP tunes then a 4.0 exhuast system will drop your egt's more than straight piping the stock system, depending on your use that may be ncessary or not. Call us if you want and we'll discuss what you do with the truck and try to help you make the best decision for your exact usage etc.

Well I will be doing some towing so I think I might go with the MMRP cool duals. I really like the look and everyone has nothing but good things to say about their systems. What about tips?
