: '06 vs. '05 LLY

Chatting with a guy at local fuel station who pulled in with an '06. He's driving it so it obviously is an lly and not lbz. He starts going on and on about the engine changes and how the heads are going bad on the '05's and :blahblah: . Anyway he tells me that he can hardly keep the tires from spinning on it b/c it is so powerful. Has a hard time even finding traction. Mind you this is Arizona so no snow or ice anywhere and haven't seen any rain for weeks. Pavement is so dry that when it will take chunks out of your tires if you spin them. Question is. is the '06 lly that much more powerful than an '05 (both stock) or is he just full of it? Because my truck will not break loose from a standing start on stock setting and he makes it sound like he can't NOT make it break loose.

mehh...I mean I havent driven one, but its the same engine...just a revised turbo that spools a bit quicker. I doubt he can break them loose from a stop just by matting the gas. I might buy that he can chirp 'em into second, but I doubt from a stop.

oh yeah..and heads going bad on the 2005's..ok keep talking dude...its the same friggin engine with a smarter brain...

06 LLY has the same power as the 05 LLY... maybe he used to drive a Yugo!

That's what I thought. This turd made it sound he couldn't keep it from breaking loose. He's probably just pissed that his engine is going to be the old model in about a week!:muahaha:

Apparently the 06 LLY is a lot more responsive and feels a lot more powerful.

hey matt, its rick, chatted with while picking upmy 06, got 750 miles on b-99 and running great, just got my wvo processer built and have run a few batches thru it, looks like its gonna work out just fine

The '06 is a little better of the start, but not like a huge difference or anything like that. Besides my '05 can easily chirp the tires going into 2nd. My 04.5lly with 35k on the clock chirped into second with a/t 265's no problem.

It's probably the guys first duramax truck, so he's all impressed and stuff...

The only difference is the 05 are detuned in 1st and 5th gear correct? I think 300 HP and 520 TQ on the 04.5 and 05 in 1st and 5th?

All LLY's are detuned to LB7 power numbers in 1st and 5th gear. 1st gear is detuned for torque managment and to prevent excessive wheel spin (since when is that a bad thing??) and 5th gear is detuned simply because its too weak to hold up reliably to 310 hp and 590/605 ft lbs of torque.

Keep in mind that the 06 LLY has all of the changes that the LBZ gets except block revisions and tuning (or so ive been told). Several people have reported that the 06LLY is faster. Including a friend that has drove mine. Said that it is very quick off the line. Only explanation is more power in 1st gear.

And what about 6th gear?????

I have an 06 and I did drive a few 2006, but I gota tell ya that between the 4 I drove there WERE a diffrence in them. I guess I might be silly but that how they FELT during testing!
Anyways I will be dyno my truck next week bone stock. I figure I like to see what base number at the wheels are going to be.

Is this why mine has never spun a wheel, stock or now? Torque management? I am looking into the Hypertech because it's the only one that corrects the DIC. Will that cure it or is the 06 still going to walk mine?

I test drove 4 06 llys definetly culd smoke them in the first 3 gears. Had all the paper work done financing and all the stuff ready. I loaded a Hypertech one day before the deals went away. It dident fix all the turbo lag but it was good enough to help me save 10k. So i called dealer told them i was going to see what the new deals wuld be and wait for LBZ

You loaded a Hypertech on an '06?

I didn't think there were any compatible programs out yet. McRat's Tech-II would not communicate with mine, and Diablo has indicated it's still going to be a couple of months before they have an '06 tune for the Predator.

It is my understanding that the 06 LLYs have full power in both 5th and 6th gear as will the LBZ.

hmmm what did they beef up in the Allison to handle the extra power in 5th gear? Im not doubting you or anything, Im just curious what actually changed inside the transmission. Im drawing a blank which clutchpacks are applied to make 6th gear...

Looking at GM tech documents, the only physical change is the addition of a tiny "6 speed pipe" in the valve body, to hydraulically enable 6th gear. Im guessing GM probably also revised the clutch's to handle more torque without slipping, kinda like Suncoast or ATS clutches.

Rick,
How are you doing your WVO? Are you doing the methanol and lye system or another receipe?

Made for tuning.

Think it's time to get a real load, overheat, and get myself a buyback.
