Went in for service and asked about changing the fuel filter, service writer said it would be around $100.00. That seemed high to me. Is that about right or was he exaggerating.
It is a 03 GMC, 15,000 miles

You can buy the filter for around $30 and install it yourself in about 10 minutes. But for dealer prices, that sounds about right.

I bought one from Diesel Injection Services for about $19.00. If you look around the web you can probably find a little better price if you buy in quanity or, maybe a dollar less each.
I don't know what my dealer charges for the service as I only have 857 miles on my truck. But, I would imagine the going rate is $60-$100 depending one what they throw in for bennies.Edited by: DavesDmax

If I were you, I'd change it myself. I changed mine for the first time yesterday. It is also an 03 GMC with 15k miles. I'm glad I changed mine because I get to keep the OEM fuel filter that has a nice thick layer of rust at the bottom. You can bet if I have injector problems any time soon, I'll be pulling that out! That topic has been discussed here at length. Plus, I got to make sure first hand that the new filter had no rust in it. I did get the filter from the dealer - but you can get them much cheaper on the internet.
I did mine by removing the wheel well cover so I could access it easier.

Definitely a good idea to do it at least once. This way when you get stuck on the side of the road with a bad load of fuel in the winter, you will be able to change it out before your hands freeze. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Don't forget to put a flashlight next to your spare filter in the cab cause I know someone forgot to install the underhood light on my truckhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs Down.gif
For $100 I would take 15 min out of my day.

I had some other issues to deal with concurrently but the dealer I took my '02 to for service charged $25.88 for the filter and $32.50 labor for changing the fuel filter = a total of $52.38 not including CA sales tax for Sacramento County. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Guess I'll keep them in mind for when I need dealer work again. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif
