: GM-2 Turbo...?

I have found a "good" running 6.5 TD engine with very low miles. It is supposed to be an L65, but things aren't quite making sense. It is an engine out of a P-chassis with side mount turbo. It has the electronic pump, BUT it has a GM-2 turbo hanging on the side. Does anyone have any idea what vintage of engine this might be? Early 94 or 95?

Update: The engine has a 506 block and a 5288 pump dated Jan 97...?

Your help is much appreciated...:exactly:

P-chassis don't have side mount turbos, or turbos at all for that matter.

P's have N/A L49 engines, G's have L65s with center mount turbo.

There are N/A 6.5s with tronic pumps in 94-95 vans, but no turbo. There are also '94 LD N/A 6.5s in pickups. But IIRC, 506 is a 92-93 casting #, which should carry a mechanical pump and a side mount GM-1 turbo, and was not available in P-chassis.

You got a weird one there sounds like, unless I'm missing something. but if its in good shape, no matter what it is, you can make it work.

Now you've got me confused. I've got the 93 6.5TD "F" series with the GM-3. Does this sound correct and if so, why would a 94 or possibly newer have a GM-2? I was under the impression that as the years went by, the GM-#'s went up as well.
Does it sound like GB has found a truck that has been an experiment or a bunch of parts thrown together?
Just curious and wanting to learn.

Don't you mean 599 is a 92-94 casting number. 506 is the 97 and up with oil spray pistons. Didn't the 92-93 trucks use a GM-3 side mount turbocharger?

TDG -

The P32 motorhome chassis was available with the 6.5TD. I have driven one. I believe that what this engine was in, but am unsure.

I have verified that it does have a 5288 pump, GM-2 low side mount turbo, and a 506 block number. These would suggest to me (except maybe the GM-2 turbo) that it is at least a 1997 engine...? Should this particular engine be converted to 18:1 for hot rodding? Should I pass for an earlier block? The complete engine is probably going to cost $1500 to $2000 (still negotiating) but may have some internal corrosion issues as it has been sitting sealed for 4+ years.

I will see if I can get pictures...

I've seen the GM-2 turbo on late '91's and '92's.... Sounds like someone just threw together a bunch of parts to make one good engine.
