: Towing w/ LB7
HSTER 09-19-2005, 10:04 AM I'm looking for some honest advice for towing, not really racing or rippin' around town.I tow 10,000 to 13,000 lbs almost every weekend and would like to know what programmer or module works good.Used the hypertech in my old 02 duramax on level 3 90hp and it worked well, just wondering if there is a better one out there. thanks for any info.
2004 LB7, 4" MBRP, AFE ST 1
Scotty Seelen 09-19-2005, 11:08 AM I went from a Hypertech (level 3) to a Bullydog Powerpup (level 3) to the Banks Six-Gun. I like the ability to change power levels on the fly with the Banks. Level 3 runs with the Hypertech on it's highest setting and level 4 runs with the Bullydog on it's 95hp setting.
Gruber 09-19-2005, 11:28 AM I run the Juice/Attidude on level 2 and I am very pleased with it. I have not run any other tunes so I cannot make any comparisons. The rig in my sig goes 16,900lbs. As an example, a grade that I regularly climb going to the lake w/o tune I would crest in 3rd gear 52mph. With the juice I crest in 4th gear at 62mph at reduced throttle to keep the EGT's down. The Juice offers a lot of features that aren't available on a lot of tuners. my 2 cents on the subject
CMDMAX 09-19-2005, 11:57 AM I agree with Gruber. I've had the J/A for a couple of years and regularly tow a 11-12K (loaded) 5th-wheel toyhauler out to the desert. I put it in/on level 2 and go with no problems.
fredw 09-19-2005, 02:29 PM van aken 110 is real nice for towing heavy, no smoke and egts seam to stay in line, few freinds running them now for over 3 years with know problems, also has tranny protection

With a stock transmission? Thanks.
fredw 09-20-2005, 01:47 AM yes, everything stock but the va110 chip, might be able to line you up with a used one
BadLatitude 09-20-2005, 02:38 AM wait , u traded a 2002 which worked great for a 2004 also with the same LB7 engine. Why would you not use the same setup. Your question reads like you have a 2004 LLY but thats not how it was written. You went from an LB7 to an LB7. Visual changes aside. Unless you made a typo and have an LLY. Why the heck wouldnt you go with what worked for you for several years! Especially towing loads considered class A commercial I would stick to somthing that you know well and is tried and true.
HSTER 09-20-2005, 08:39 AM yes it is a 2004 LB7, I asking because the hypertech was one of the first ones out , and just seeing if there is better ones for towing heavy loads.
i like the features on the Edge, tripple dog etc., but just lookig for some feedback from guys that pull with these trucks , more then just racing. Thanks
Black Max 09-20-2005, 09:14 AM yes, everything stock but the va110 chip, might be able to line you up with a used one
I bought the 70/110 last fall, but have been too nervous about the transmission to install it. I bought it for towing and planned using it on the 70 setting. I installed my gauges a couple of weeks ago, so now I can monitor the EGT's. No good reason for NOT installing it now, huh? Thanks.
fredw 09-20-2005, 09:24 AM like i said previously, freinds are running that tune on the 110 setting pulling for the last 3 years and do not hold back, their trucks are completly stock and no problems

Thanks for the reassurances; I decided on that one (SmartBox E) after much research here. Most claimed it was good for towing, provides tranny protection, and reasonable EGT's. Thanks again.
fredw 09-20-2005, 09:37 AM no problem
Black Max 09-21-2005, 05:23 PM no problem
Put in on today; can't imagine why I waited so long. Can really feel a difference on the lower setting. Now if I can just flip the switch to the higher setting.............!
fredw 09-21-2005, 08:06 PM it is a great tune for towing, and no worries needed, now keep in mind if towing real heavy loads and running big mountain grades in high ambeint temps, common sense must be had, but i still think their would be no problem in that situation, keep us posted on the tune, good luck
Got Juice? 09-21-2005, 09:01 PM If I had one module to choose for Towing, it would be the Juice and attitude.
Trans protection, Automatic EGT backdown.... hard to go wrong with that!
Idle_Chatter 09-22-2005, 12:03 AM I don't have any comparison as I've only run the Juice and lately the Juice/Attitude. I don't tow very heavy, but just got back from a 3500 mile run to San Antonio and back pulling my 6x6x12 box trailer. Trailer is 1300 empty, had about 1000 on board. I ran the Juice in level 2, low boost fueling 3 and ran 75 or 80 mph on cruise control for the whole trip. Temps were in the high 90's in Texas and I fought some pretty serious wind in central Texas going down and all across Wyoming coming back. Mpg was as low as 12.5 and as high as 15.5 with an average of just over 14. EGTs ran around 800 to 950 most of the time and peaked once at 1200. Works for me!
dbloyd 09-23-2005, 03:49 PM i have the 70/125 on mine. been running it with no problems now
for a year. it tows good with the 70 and the 125 will get your attention.
