After what I would suspect was a bad load of fuel and fairly cold temperatures here in New York I have made an interesting discovery involving my 2500hd cc d/a fuel tank.
Temperatures dropped here into single digits, truck started with no problem then stalled out, removed fuel filter into warmer temps and found some ice crystals in bottom of filter, changed filter primed and started truck, died again. Priming pump was not rising while pumping so I suspected gelling and or freezing in tank. Pumped fuel out of tank, fed to home boiler, refueled and added DFA. Truck ran good for a few days with temps in the 20s. Mercury falls again and truck dies again. Pump out tank again and drop tank (while laying in ice on driveway) I was dissapointed when I didn't find any ice or slush in bottom of tank. I bring the tank sender/suction assembly into the house and find some ice in it. After letting it warm up I started getting some water drops out of it, but was not satisfied that I had gotten it all. Finaly figured out how to get this piece of plastic apart without breaking into several pieces. What I found was that the tank pickup takes suction from this little can, it has a check valve on the bottom that will let the water or fuel in but not the water out. This small amount of water would freeze then get sucked into this little strainer and plug it up. My belief is that if I find any water at all in my separator/filter I am going to drop that tank again before winter to ensure all water has been removedEdited by: fishin engineer
