I've blown my share of chevy/dodge gassers but have yet to have the unrepairable happen on the diesels (except for my dad's truck, but hey I wasn't driving;P).

Could be worse. You could own a Ford. Seriously though, older smallblock GM's are cheap to rebuild. Not that you'll get that done today but I'll bet you can get parts in stock. (Short block, ?) You could throw some gear oil and or slick 50 in it and pray. (This worked for me for 2 weeks in a old nissan-rod knocking loud!) with a heavy emphasis on the word pray!

When an engine starts knocking the best thing to do is tear it down before it throws a rod and you have to find a new engine core. The magical solution? They happen, nothing ever goes exactly as you think it will.

Yah! Gear oil is definitely not the right thing. I guess it depends on how bad you want to attempt to drive it. (Or need to)
At least if you do blow it up the blocks are cheap and easy to get, at least in my area. (My neighbor has one right now running for $100)

PDJ

Just looked on http://www.car-part.com/ and found one for $250. Runs. That may be the quickest way to get running. Buy a good running motor from junkyard, plop in and drive. Then rebuild yours in the meantime and take your time. (Make it trick) Then sell the motor later and re-coup some dough.

I take that back! I just found one for $100 runs. You'll have to look to find one in your area.

That site is a search for nationwide (Including Canada) yards. I thought you were in NJ (Pemberton ?) I'll look again in your area.

Nope.. Vancouver BC.. west coast..

PDJ
09-17-2005, 03:11 PM
O.K I looked up Pemberton. It is in BC right? If so then the one in ON is way to far away. Will keep looking. You know though that a 4.3 V6 or 305 (or any smallblock) will bolt right up. This may help if you can't find a 350.

I'm looking on the site that I gave you. Most of the Canadian ones don't seem to list a price. Say's call. Found one in Walla Walla, Wash for $250 but don't know how far that is for you. Just look the site over and be sure to put in not just your year but years that would work. Also not just Trucks but cars, etc.. I think anything from 95 down would work as 96 is the begining of the Vortec.
Look the site over and if I find anything in other places that are near you i'll let you know.
Sorry this post got off of the forums topic but that place also gives lines on 6.5 diesels. Heck throw a 6.5TB in that stepside. Now that would be cool!

no the truck was running and i was suppose to take them off from the motor not the dist cap..less of a shock..

I did haul it to "buddy's " house.. he took off the oil pan check the crank. definatly was the bearings,

he gives me the option, of leaving the truck with him and he will use it as a part truck cause it wont pass inspection. he wants the box and the bumper and tires. says the rest is worthless..says he will give me 150 bucks for it..:muahaha:

or just put in a 350 and hope i dont waste any more money on it.....think ill go with the motor..

PDJ
09-18-2005, 10:49 AM
I don't know what kind of inspections you go through up there but if it is just emissions then running some methanol might help that out.(Or convert truck to propane, cheaper for fuel) I don't have to go thru that crap where i'm at, at least not yet so I don't know what is all involved in those inpections.

It came with a air care certificate. but its pretty rusty,, the box and the cab.. but i m not going to sell it to my friend.. id rather use it as a dog house then lose 700.00 .. kids can drive it in the field, if it gets pulled off the road, hes just trying to scare me.. this is typical in my daily challenge of dealing with men,, friends or not..

Don't take anyones word for it. I would find out for yourself wether it will pass. If it doesn't find out what it will take to pass inspections. It is definitely worth more than $150 at least from where i'm at!

Chicago TDP
09-20-2005, 03:28 PM
You need to be carefull that the truck was not run upsidedown, or that will mean the lower end was starved of oil and then there is the potential for a big problem.

countrycoach
09-20-2005, 03:30 PM
It all depends, if the engine was still runing at the time of the roll over it is possible that it could have done some damage. But then again it is possible that it is competely fine. The engine would need a good tearing appart and inspection and to clean all the oil out of the top of the cylinders. How much are they asking for the engine? That alone would be the deciding factor.

jenn
09-20-2005, 04:46 PM
For sure it was running at the time. he was goofing off in a field and rolled it lucky to be alive. squished the whole cab.. tractor was there and flipped it up on the all fours.
But the time frame I imagine there would be four guys standing around laughing at what idiots they are, smoke a nother one , drink a beer and then figure out what where going to do... I know these guys,

thanks.. i am just 7 weeks so i can still fit under the hood.. ;)

This guy came into the shop and said he had a 350 for me he just took out of a 67 beaumont. i ask about km he never knew.. it has holley carb on it. has a leaky valve..??.. the only problems, wants 500.00 for it .. yikes,, a bit steep considering I just paid 700. for the truck..
. i am getting it checked out from the guy whos helpin me with it..

( i dont think hes such a good help though he told him the guy he could get 500.00 for it......:badidea: .)

its way cheaper to walk.......................:p:

countrycoach
09-21-2005, 03:17 PM
It all depends. With the carb it might be worth that. A leaky valve could be two diff. things. The cheap and easy thing to replace would be the valve seals. If you have ever seen a chevy 350 crank up with over 100,000 miles chances are you saw a little blue/white smoke come out the tail pipe for just a sec. What that means is the seal around the valve steem has gone bad and a little bit of oil is seeping past the valve and into the cylinders. That is no big thing and its cheap and easy to fix. Now if it is loosing compression because of a valve than that can get expensive. If it is that, just hope that you can take some lapping compound and reseat the valve that way. If not, then the head will have to be machined and the valve will have to be reground. If it is just a valve seal then 500.00 is fair with a carb, if not then I would offer him 300.00. Good luck and let us know what you find out!

A little advice on heads...

Don't buy the "new" heads you'll see on eBay. These heads appear to be new GM castings that are dressed with valves and springs, basically complete. These heads are indeed new castings, just not GM castings. These heads are made in China, using Chinese Steel (which we ALL know is inferior to US grade steel). Anyways, many distributors are selling these heads. Problems? YES! I have heard of a few cases so far of people having problems with poor castings, mainly coolant entering intake ports, I know of two cases. Another problem with these heads is the poor machining, they are almost all re-surfaced from new, see the problem here? They surface the heads AFTER they are complete with precombustion cups installed. This leads to thinner pre-cups that are MORE likely to crack.

OK, I'll get off my rant on chinky bug heads...

A good source for NEW heads is going to be Peninsular Diesel www.peninsulardiesel.com , they offer New GM complete heads for right at $500 a piece, which ain't bad considering they are NEW and complete with NEW valves and components.

For reman heads a good source is going to be DSG Canada www.dieselservices.com but, you're going to need some rebuildable cores.

Hey , thanks for all those sites.

They found two rebuilt heads.$1500 for the pair.. they quoted me 700.00 labor.( not sure why so much the heads where out already..??). $200. high quote he said..for extra stuff..oil. anti freeze ..... approx...2600.00 to do the job, they are putting them in today..... all this time. and thats all it was , the heads.. thoses other machanics could have done that too........ Dum duhs!!

He also asked if the bottom end was ok. and if it ran good before it got over heated ,, wondering if they did take off the oil pan and checked out bearings and crank etc,, or if i should get them to do it....SOunds like they've been busy and just want to get it out of there..........
Dum question...Is there a warrenty on the heads? and do you have to break them in as you would a block?
