: Harsh shift?

Lately I've had some harsh 2-3 shifts. 3rd gear engages with a heavy jolt. Not all the time, though. Any ideas? Is it normal for something like this to happen? The other thing I noticed is when pulling the trailer, under heavy acceleration, the shifts feel almost like a manual, where it feels like it completely releases the gear, then 1/2 sec later gngages the next. Is that normal when under load?

It's not uncommon to get a bad shift every once in a while but if it's happening fairly consistantly it could indicate a problem. Is your truck stock?

Have the TAPs reset and a fast learn done.

Yep, bone stock... never seen any drugs of any kind, either... It's not "consistent" (although the "grinding noise posted below is more or less), but it has happened a handful of times in the last week or two. never done anything like it before.

An another note, if you recall, I posted a while back about a "grinding" noise that seemes to be around shifts... This AM I noticed a pattern... it seems that if I am applying med throttle, in what seems to be about 1/2 way or so through 2nd, if I put it in T/H, it often makes the noise (which I can feel a bit also). I was able to reproduce it a few times. I may be off base, but it almost seems like the TC is having issues locking up at times...

Mike, when I get the new scan tool from Ease (due out any time now), I'll reset TAPS, put it in fast learn and flog it....

What you are hearing is likely the torque converter solenoid. In some trucks you'll get a valve flutter in the bore when it locks up that makes a buzzing or grinding noise. Usually it's loudest at the light and medium throttle. Although it is annoying it's not damaging anything.

HOWEVER, if the harsh shift you are experiencing happens at the same time it could be your torque converter clutch is not engaging correctly. If that's not it I'd follow Mike L.'s advice.

No, the harsh shifts don't occur at the same time... totally seprate.

Mopefully that's all the "ginding" noise is. My car ('95 Cougar w/'99 4R70W) makes the same exact noise...

One thing you can do to verify is to do a light or medium throttle accel past 50 MPH in Normal mode. If you hear the same noise around 45-50 MPH then that's what it is. Like I said, it's annoying but nothing to worry about.

You have to take it to a dealer.

I think all version 1.20 and newer bully dog programers will do it also

I'll get that sometimes, usually when I'm in T/H and get on it... my harshness is the 2-3 shift (Intermittently) when I have the go-pedal on or near the floor.... It's harsher than it used to be. I also got a "Range inhibited" this week... put it in drive and bam... put it in park, then back to drive, Everything fine. I started getting them after my first time towing about 9000# from Elkhart IN to eastern Long Island NY. got them a few times right after, then hadn't seen one until this week.
