Took my 02 (127,000 miles) to a Stealer for hard starts (Thinking it was bad Injectors) and they come back and say bad fuel pressure regulator. They want almost 1100.00 to fix it (5.5 hrs and a 425.00 part). After reading several different posts about the FPRV I see none of these symptoms. Does anyone agree with the stealer? Or should I have another mechanic look at it?

Did it throw any codes? I beleive P0089 is the code for a FPRV thats acting funky.

Is a DTC the same as a code? If so no it has not. I forgot to add the stealer said it was actually the pump but the pump was included in the FPRV.
Thanks

hmmmm I havent heard of too many CP3's (high pressure fuel injection pump) going bad on the Dmax's but maybe one of the mechanics (dmaxallitech) or someone can shed some more light on the issue. Yes a DTC is a code...DTC=Diagnostic Trouble Code

i had to replace my fprv on my 02. it kept throwing 88 and 89 codes. dealer did it and it cost me $400 cdn. for the fprv and 1 hr. labor. the fprv is not part of the cp3. you will pay alot more than $400 for a cp3.

After reading some of the old posts I don't see any symptoms of the FPRV. I don't have the lopy idel. It is just extremely hard to start after I turn it off. Sometimes it can crank for over 20 seconds. I have had the fuel filter replaced.

After you let go of your ankles, take it someplace else for a second opinion

blazeman,
Is your 02 covered under the 7 year/200K mile warantee?
I believe the fuel pressure regulator falls under the engine warantee.
Can anyone verify this?

The injectors are all that is covered AFTER the 100K waranty. The truck will not start till the rail presure is around 5K.With an injector issue with high return rates the rail pressure builds very slowly hence the extended crank. One of the proceedures under the injector special policy is to ramp up fuel pressure to 160 mpa and see if the actual will follow.High injector return rates will not allow the pressure to build. Some techs think if the rail pressure won't ramp up the pump is not capable and condem it.
They at least need to check the return rate per bank before condeming the pump.Fuel regulator return rate and the actual and desired fuel pressure can be monitored with the tech2 if you know what you're looking for. It's not very likely unless the pump has been compromised by water or silica.I agree try another dealer.
