Ok, so how does the vehicle differentiate between driver 1 and driver 2?

I believe it is by which remote you unlock the truck with. They should be numbered on the back.

That is right. It goes by the keyless entry remote.

I think my '03 does have a chip in the key. Am I wrong or did they do away with that sometime after 2003?

No Gm has never used a chip in their key on their trucks. The system they use is called Passlock II. You can not start it without the proper key but it does not have a chip. They use Hall effect sensors to 'read' the cut of the key. If the cut is not right then the truck won't start. This makes attempts to start it by smashing the column and turning the cylinder manually not possible. It doesn't protect you from someone copying your key.
On a side note, ford still doesn't use any key security system on their Superduties, even in 2006. Their 2006 truck are one of the easiest targets on the road. I watched a video of a guy breaking into a 2004 F250 and driving it away in 25 seconds. Scary stuff. This was on a parking lot security camera when a friend's truck got stollen.

Well, maybe not anybody. It took me 3-trips to get a working key.:)
