Hello all. New to diesels, but this site is great and has already helped a bunch. My truck (see sig) does not seem to have a block heater. I have looked for any type of cord with a plug and have come up with nothing. Where exactly would it be under the hood? The truck was originally sold in Montana and now I have it in Colorado, and would figure it came with a heater. Perhaps it never came with one? Any input would be great. Also, would Prestone 50/50 mix antifreeze work fine in my truck? If so are there any additives needed because it is a diesel? The owners manual says the coolant capacity is 25 qts. Would that much be required for just a simple flush and fill? Winter will be here soon and I am just trying to be prepared.

Fianlly, off topic a bit. How rare is it to see a half ton tuck with the 6.5 TD, 4L80, and 14 bolt rear? Other info from the VIN also says it has a HD chasis.

Thanks for your help.

Take a look under the engine and in one of the driver's side freeze plugs you should see the cord starting. From there, you may be able to find the end of it, or where "should have gone."

Antifreeze, if yours was green, remember to change it as recommended. No special additives needed for diesel operation. If you do a lot of heavy towing with a 94, you may see higher operating temps. If this is the case, make sure your radiator is clean inside and out. If that's not enough, you may have to move up to 97+ cooling modifications.

1500's are not "that" popular, but are out there.

My cord was cable tied to the battery cable near the 2nd battery, was a PITA to get to. As knkrerb said, look on the passenger side of the engine for a black cord coming from the engine and follow it till you find the cord. The cord is black and flat.

I ended up routing mine down to my passenger side tow hook so that I didnt have to open the hood every evening and morning. I cable tied it with black ties to the tow hook so that if I forget to unplug it, as I am backing up, it will unplug and not tear the cord from the truck.

Mine was in the front of the drivers side fender well with a cover over the prongs. It was kind of hard to tell it was a plug until the cover was off.
