Other than the fact that it is illegal and noisy, no problem. It is a nice cheap way to go. Under 50.00 bucks. I didn't win any friends with this one. Oh well, it's not a popularity contest.

I think you will find that it will still be pretty quiet. I would think that the cat will keep it pretty quiet.

Open mouth insert foot. I forgot about the cat. part. Keeps it quiet and from being illegal as well. Well almost!

ON EDIT: Any Forest/BLM/ park road states that you have to have some type of spark arrestor. A cat passes this test. I duno if it would pass a state/county emmisions inspection with just a cat?Edited by: Bronco

Bronco,

Here is an excerpt from the Texas Department of Public Safety concerning vehicle inspection. It is my understanding that on turbo diesel equipped vehicles that the turbo is considered a "muffler device".

Texas Department of Public Safety (http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/inspection/rules_list.asp?itemdrop=Exhaust+System&rejectsubmit=Go)

20.15 Exhaust System. Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with muffler in good working order and in constant operation.

Muffler defined: Muffler is a device consisting of a series of chambers or baffle plates or other mechanical design for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine and/or turbine wheels for the purpose of receiving exhaust gas from a diesel engine, both of which are effective in reducing noise.

P.S. If they don't inspect it, then it is a perfect excuse to buy Summit Racing's 4" Exhaust System ($299).

I dislike that legal speak! You have to read it 5 times just to understand what they are trying to say. I gave up at 3.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

I installed the straight pipe on my 2002 DMax about two weeks ago. I love it, it is quiet a bit louder, but I'm not complaining. When you get your foot in it, it sounds like a big rig. Not to sound dumb, but I can't find a catallitic converter on mine, could this be the reason it is considerably louder? Drive On!

There is a real good chance your LB7 never came equiped with a emissions package. Most didn't. All of the LLY motors will. Your truck will be louder if running a straight pipe and no cat. vs. a straight pipe and a cat.

On the LLY I would bet any mods to the intake and/or exhaust will get the turbo whistle louder than you can imagine.

The 6.0 Powerstroke has the same turbo... boy does it sing with mods.

At work the other day a guy started his 6.0 with complete 4" and AFE intake and bully dog module. We stood back buy the exaust tip and talked. After about 2 minutes of warming up John nodded for me to listen, something on his engine kicked in. The exaust just started to whistle. He was pretty proud of his truck. It is a 2003 3500 4 door with the Rancho/off road package. It is a nice truck and he kindly refers to it as the jet plane.

Has anyone out there flanged their straight pipe as well as the muffler so as to be able to put the muffler back. (ie for inspections or if it ends up being too loud for thier taste?) Any pictures?
