: True HID Headlights
jboysen 09-14-2005, 08:34 PM I was poking around the net looking for HID headlights for my truck and ran across this:
http://www.brightheadlights-hid.com/Headlights-x2020.htm
Complete replacement for the headlight assembly on 99-02 chevy trucks. Uses HID lights in place of the low beam and a standard halogen bulb for the high beam.
Even though they're not cheap (relatively speaking), I must admit that I'm curious about them. I think it would be great to have HID lighting but I am concerned about a couple of things:
1. With the headlight switch set to automatic, will the HIDs have trouble switching off and on (somewhat rapidly depending on the situation) because of the daylight sensor switching from DRLs to Low Beams? It was my impression that HIDs have trouble cycling from on to off to on, kind of like sodium lights, am I mistaken?
2. If it is indeed the case that the HIDs have trouble cycling like this, will the HIDs simply delay in 're-igniting' when switching from DRLs to Low Beam, whereby leaving you momentarily 'headlightless'?
3. Will this situation also occur when switching from Low Beam to High Beam? I suppose this could be circumvented by having an 'all headlights on' mod done.
Thoughts and opinions?
bigRazor 09-15-2005, 07:49 AM The HID's on my wifes Pacifica go on and off quickly without an issues.
I was checking out that website and was surprised to see those HIDs are street legal. I've always been under the impression that HIDs were illegal on all vehicles that did not come with OEM HIDs. I guess that's changed now. You might want to keep the original lights to put on when you need to get the truck inspected, just in case.
socal LLy 09-15-2005, 10:17 PM I had a set on my 2002 tahoe and they were great I had them for 2 years no problems and I resold them for $250 when I got rid of the tahoe I will post a pic when I get home.one more good thing is they are dot approved

Search e-bay for a bit on HID conversions.....there are a ton of em out there now. Some cheaper then others.

thats the good thing about the 05. you dont have to buy a new headlight unit cause it has the blinders already in them

SixLiterHD 09-19-2005, 09:48 AM Yall did a retrofit w/ the HID projectors or just put a kit in the stock housings?
How about some pics? Im about to put a kit in my Denali projectors
killerbee 09-19-2005, 10:12 AM Im about to put a kit in my Denali projectors
I would just like to suggest, this is a very bad idea. HID chroma requires its own special optics. The projectors on the denali are very poor for HID, and end up hurting oncoming traffic. It is a shame so many ricers do this, it is royal PITA.
Don't want anyone to take this wrong way I hope. You can get some nice S2000 or Acura projectors, and do it the right way, replacing the denali projectors, and using oem type HID bulbs/ballasts.
And the final product is so rewarding.
DURAtotheMAX 09-19-2005, 11:35 AM Killerbee--- Is there any way to retrofit a "true" HID reflector into the 2003-2005 Silverado headlights? I really need some better headlights for my '05 and would like to go HID...I havent been able to find a "TRUE" HID kit yet. Not some lame thing that simply replaces the stock bulbs.

killerbee 09-19-2005, 11:45 AM I know what you are after. I know of nothing to make the silverado headlight true HID, although someone with real good fab skills can do anything. An oem projector/bulb combo is the way to go. I wish there was better news. The GM denali lamps are very doable, because they are set up with removeable projectors. Unfortunately they don't swap out in the Chevy.
Anyone not wanting to sell a kidney could use some fairly new IR coated halogen bulbs I discovered recently, in place of the existing. (no gimmicks, more light)
One thing I forgot to mention earlier, putting HID, in a non-HID vehicle is an illegal act, just FYI.
skii_bumm1 09-19-2005, 08:49 PM I have true hid in my truck, ballast, ignitor and xenon bulb. Had them in my 03 and now the one bulb is blown out. It's the best money you could ever spend on your truck. Projectors look cool and that's it. My dad has an Acura TL and they have projector with hids, on low beam they are annoying the beam is so perfect it's hard to see on back roads. But highbeam is a different story they are badass. That's no different if you spend the money and get hid highbeams on your truck which I'm doing. It's great people in benzes flash you with your low beams on with HID, then I flash them my highs and I nearly run them off the road.
killerbee 09-19-2005, 08:53 PM great.
When he said "true HID", I am pretty sure he wanted something that wasn't going to piss off everyone in front of him
DURAtotheMAX 09-19-2005, 08:54 PM But those are the "illeagal" HID's right...? I would get those, but I feel badly for the other drivers...

Max Power 09-19-2005, 09:15 PM Try the HIR before you get to carried away. They are pretty decent and perfectly legal. I've been running them for a year and a half or so and I am pretty happy.
I am pretty sure this is where I bought mine from http://www.hirheadlights.com/
killerbee 09-19-2005, 09:24 PM That's them. I think you can even run the highs in the low position, with a small mod.
I have a set, unused I will sell. $50 for 2 or $90 for 4.
snuffysmith 09-20-2005, 01:25 PM stock housing with BMW HID's :grd: :ro)

killerbee 09-20-2005, 02:14 PM can you show a close up of the projector, within the housing?
snuffysmith 09-20-2005, 02:26 PM can you show a close up of the projector, within the housing?
ME?
killerbee 09-20-2005, 03:20 PM Yes,
legal HID's use either a DOT approved reflector, or an oem projector.
The glare in the pic suggests neither.

this is an 05 with the STOCK head lamp, has that little blinder cover in it.
killerbee 09-20-2005, 04:04 PM I understand. HID's require special focal length type reflectors.
Don't worry about it. Most people don't usually get what I am trying to say.
DURAtotheMAX 09-20-2005, 05:04 PM Killerbee--- What about taking those REAL DOT-aproved HID/Xenon lights designed for 2001-2002 Silverado's and adapting them for use in our "cat eyes" headlight buckets. Do you think it could be done? And certainly the result would be better than the illegal "Xenon replacement bulbs", right? Because the reflector was designed to handle HID light from the start...If I can find a cheap set I may look into modding them to fit my 2005 Headlights...

I am not familiar with an 01-02 HID settup. Were they aftermarket?
Maybe. I just have no familiarity.

This is what he (and I at the start of this thread) is referring to:
http://www.brightheadlights-hid.com/Headlights-x2020.htm
killerbee 09-20-2005, 09:44 PM Nice. Too bad DOT approval is so expensive, more companies would do this for the newer vehicles. HID is on the DOT **** list, mostly due to the abusive installs.
There are a few guys who do HID retrofits into just about any housing. 2 that I know of.
HIDplanet.com answers a lot of questions. Mostly eastern ricers, but an educated bunch.
SixLiterHD 09-21-2005, 01:06 AM I have been over there alot asking questions.
As far as Killing oncoming traffic w/ Denali projectors. They have a nice cutoff line and do not have that glare or blinding effect.
This is them with Silver Stars in them

This is from about 40' and at a small angle. I know there are hot spots but that is just because of the halogen bulb not the projector
