That's the funniest thing I ever heard of. In the 90's I was ripping the diesels out of Chevys, Olds and Caddys and replacing them with gas V8's just so the customers could get a dealer to take it in on trade. We can thank GM for killing the diesel market in this country. We can also thank them for the Chevette and the Corvair which killed the rear drive market and almost killed the small car market. We have so much to thank GM for. Sure glad we bailed them out. Sorry, not up for that kind of classic.

I do not think the Olds diesel had the same bellhousing as a 6.2. Can anyone confirm or deny this ?

Thats true. Both engines have different bellhousing designs.

Kinda what I thought and the front wheel drive makes a tranny swap a challenge. My mothers 85 Eldo blew two of them up. One at 20k then at 50k. We junked it. Handgrenades.

it depends, My Olds has the 200r4 with both BOP and chevy pattern, so I was able to swap in the 6.2d without any issues

I had a Olds wagon, got a deal on a 455 for $50.00 and did the swap after a blew a head gasket. Great running car after I did that. Hated to see the the car go!

The Olds 5.7 V8, 4.3 V8, and 4.3 non transverse V6 diesels all used the 'BOP' bell. BOP is Buick Oldsmobile Pontiac and Cadillac. Chev was the oddball that had to be different. I believe the transverse 4.3 V6 used the transverse FWD bell that was the same as the 60*v6 's-10' bell. After 82 the most common transmission in the RWD cars would have been the 200 4r which usually had the dual bell. If you got the towing package you may have got a 350c but I think that was pretty rare, most common in wagons.

The 3rd gen FWD E boides were 79-85 Eldorado Toronado Riveria and 80-85 Seville 'the bustle back'. The engine was not transverse, it was mounted the usual way. The transmission layout was similar to the transverse were the converter and pump is in the bell but then uses a timing chain to drive the rest of the unit which is along the side of the oil pan. Unlike a transverse where the diff is in the transmission case these had the diff (or final drive) bolted on the tail of the transmission. They then had a special oil pan with a notch in it to allow the passenger side shaft extension to pass under the engine. The Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and later Buick V6 engines all had an extra boss added to the block to support this shaft. The original one came out in 66 in the Toronado. 67 for the Eldorado. It was basically a THM400. 66 and 67 had a switch pitch (dual stall rate) torque converter. The front suspension and drive in these cars is almost identical to the 90's+ independent setup in the 4x4 trucks using the torsion bars on the lower control arms. Even the CV axles and hub bearing assemblies are almost the same. 66-70 was the first gen where they were somewhat small (for the era) sporty looking cars. 71-78 they actually got bigger but still kept a little more of a younger sporty look than the rest of the lines. 79-85 they got a major down size which included things like the suspension and transmission. The new transmission was based on the THM200 and in 82 got OD and lockup. Diesel was first available in 79 and lasted till the end of the line and diesels in 85. There is debate weather or not the 4.3 V6 diesel was available in these cars. I would think not and have never seen one or even a picture of one. The RWD 4.3 V8 and V6 was a pretty rare animal only to be seen in a few Cutlass's.

I put a big block 455 gas engine in it! It fit right in with no problem, bolted right up to the 200r4 trans. Drained the diesel fuel out of the tank and put 5 gals of gas in, fired right up. Since the diesels had heavier springs up front, didn't have any problem with the weight of the big block. Only thing that needed to be modified was the bracket for the A/C compressor.
