: Do fender benders show up on a vehicle's history?

I was in a little fender bender the other day with my 2001 half ton........am replacing the chrome section of the front bumper and replacing all bumper brackets via a body shop. Will this show up on the history of my vehicle? (Carfax or what not). The reason I'm asking is that I'm getting ready to trade the 1500 in on a DMAX, and I'm curious if the dealer (not a GM dealer, just a truck dealership) will know about this and use it in the bargaining process or what not. It's not that I'm trying to pawn a bad truck on them as I never put a dent in it up until the other day, and it still drives perfect.

(BTW, I'm trading in on an LB7 to make this applicable to this forum http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/wink.gif )

Dealers screw you on trade-ins so badly that it won't matter.
Take whatever kbb.com shows as your trade value and knock it down by about 25%... figure that's what you're going to get. Kbb listed by Tundra at 15k. The dealer wanted to give me $7,500. I got them up to $11k.
I talked to a Toyota dealer the next day and they said that I "robbed" them... that they wouldn't have budged over $9,200.

Kbb showed "dealer retail" at about $22k, and no matter the history, that's what they will offer it for (if they don't send it to auction).

Trades are running low right now... employee discount pricing has got everyone buying '05s and '06s right now. Even without the employee discounts, most dealers are giving their '05s away to clear the lot, and they do not price used vehicles attractively enough for anyone to buy except someone that really, really can't afford the extra $80/month.

About the only thing dealers ask about and are concerned about, at least in the land of the gropenator, is frame damage.

Ya... my Tundra had nearly $8k in right corner damage when it was 6 months old... New fender, hood, door, right side lights, bumper frame and cover, radiator support....

It's amazing that 400 pounds of sheetmetal costs as much as a used Echo.

the truck doesn't have any frame damage, so this is reassuring. it's a 2001 reg. cab LWB Sierra SLE that's pretty loaded. it has the baby v8 (4.8) and gets pretty decent mileage.

I drive a hard bargain, but I get the feeling that I'm not going to get what I want on a trade.

Don't mean to offend you cuz I know you like Toyota's, but that just shows how cheap those trucks are made. They are like tin cans--Dodge's seem to fall apart on impact also. I work for a towing company on the side and see these vehicles get crushed on what seems like very little impact. Very brittle and cheaply made. Not saying their not reliable, I think toyota engineers great motors, but as far as how their chassis are put together, they have little to be desired, especially for a work truck.

As long as no police report was filed it won't show up. If you did file a report or claim with your insurance company it will show up in the NICB data base.

Doesn't Carfax get some of it's info from Motor Vehicle Depts? If so, and it required reporting, it might show up.

Carfax is hit or miss, and I think Black Max is correct RE the DMV checks. They aren't able to pick up repairs at non-dealership facilities, so that's the only other way they'd be able to know about it. But I'd say it doesn't matter since you're trading it to a dealer -- if you were selling it to a private party, I'd be more worried about it.

FYI -- I carfaxed the pickup in my sig before I'd even gone to see it in person (looking at internet ads) and it came up with no collision damage. When I got to the dealer to inspect the truck, lo and behold, the driver's door and fender had clearly been replaced/repainted. No frame damage, but still, Carfax isn't going to tell the whole story very often.

I had a fender bender(Well, $2500 to fix) with my Regal last year. Got a police report and my insurance co paid to fix damage to both cars(accident was my fault). When I sold it last spring, nothing showed up on Carfax report.

We just bought a 98 Buick Park Av Ultra.First we ran the VIN through DP and it came up with a engin/tra rebuild @ 76000mi.We also ran it through Carfax and it showed no repairs.

sounds like the dealers aren't terribly picky as far as that goes then, huh?

I just bought a used 2000 Olds Alero for my daughter to drive. Carfax report the dealer ran for me only showed purchase and title transfers and listed no accidents. When I questioned the dealer how accidents were reported, he indicated it was up to a police agency responding to the accident and the officers own personal account as to the severity of the damage whether or not to collect the VINs for the vehicles involved. BTW, under very close observation, I felt the car was very clean and had never been in an accident.

hmm. Come to think of it, I don't believe the cops took VINs down. There were several vehicles at fault, and they didn't even issue any tickets. :eek2:

The frame and suspension were not affected. A guy turned left in front of me and I clipped his right rear corner doing about 40.

The cop and I were both surprised the airbags did not deploy, but the decelleration was not fast enough (I rolled through the intersection after clipping him).

I drove the truck for another 2 weeks before taking it in for repair. All I had to do was cut away the plastic parts that were in the wheelwell and rubbing.

My 2000 Chevy van was rear-ended about 6 months ago... I was the 3rd vehicle in the chain and not damaged, although the Honda that was shoved into me was only towable on a dolly. I was given paperwork to submit to the State as part of the police report. My insurance guy said since I was #3 in the chain collision, not to worry about sending in the paperwork... and yes... IF I did... it would be picked up in a Carfax report.
