With all these lousey cold temps. do you think the CAT element needs to be insulated with something. What I was thinking of was an arrangement like those beer can coolers and slide them up around the element. Mine gets all covered with slush and ice and must be very cold.

I don't suppose it would hurt anything. if you run a good additive (like primrose 409) you should be fine either way as long as you are using winter diesel. also you might want to look at a deflector shield. some people like them:

It might help against rocks and stuff. But the lines would freeze before the filter.

I wouldn't bother. Insulation only affects the rate of change in temperature, not the end point. Insulation doesn't ADD calories to the equation.
