Just FYI, I will be testing a revised VA 200+ tune that promises to be a useful upgrade allowing the engine to rev a bit higher. I think it will need just a bit more, but this is a start and I did not want to get carried away until I verified the changes. It does not appear at this time (still need to test the latest ATS trans/converter) that we will be able to get the Allison to consistently shift below 3200 like it is supposed to, so raising the RPM capability is the next best thing.

Any word on this upgrade yet? Also if this proves to be a viable upgrade what will it cost current VA box users to get it done? Thanks

So far it seems good. I need to get a few more updated units out there.

This will NOT increase the base RPM limit, but seems to help the shifting quite a bit.

Ditto, I'd be willing to try the new updated tune out.

Yes, send them in. Bear in mind I am cautiously optimistic that this will cover it, but not 100% sure till we get some more feedback. In other words, Fred may want to wait before putting it thru customs twice...

HMMM...when many tested this box when it came out it didn't cause shifting problems, unless you run an ATS trans acording to Kennedy...I guess everyone who tried it and found it to shift like crap was crazy, or just had the wrong tranny. He claimed "it's blowing through the converter". How is it that other, more powerful programs do not have this problem? Now he's saying that it doesn't shift right and raising the rve limit is the next best thing???!! SO let me see if I get this, there was no problem until it was fixed??? rrrrriiigghht....

I'll stand by my statement that it worked fine with my ATS trans/converter. It started acting up on my Suncoast V install. Did it with the Suncoast converter, did it with the Socal converter, and got better with the latest Suncoast converter, but not entirely sure if it is 100% with the std tune yet. With the new tune it has been 100% so far in my testing, but I need to get it in the hands of a few others.

Brandon (among others) never had a problem in his truck. Tomac did not either, then he made some changes in his trans and it acted up when he tried it. Suffice to say that IF your trans shifts on time, it will work fine on the original version, but if not you'll need extra RPM. I think I've made myself clear that it is not a guarrantee. When the stock program begins to roll off fuel so does the VA, and the Juice. The Juice respects the rolling off of the factory fueling (3300-ish) and follows it while the VA tries to maintain until you break free of the tables where it discontinues adding any fuel. Van Aaken did not extend the tables because the shifting is supposed to be done by this RPM. The latest file maintains fueling increases through the shift and appears to run out to around 3500 on the stock tune which is where the OEM tune draws the line.

At Weekend On The Edge I asked Clint the following question: "How do we make the Allison shift earlier" His reply: "Do you mean earlier, or on time?" I said "On time I guess would be the proper description" His answer: "Put this transmission in" referring to the ATS Extreme trans that he had waiting to be loaded into my truck. I plan to test this in the future and do have the original files to use.

I'll add that this "babbling" on the rpm limit typically occurs in T/H mode at the top of 2nd gear right where the TCC is trying to apply. It also sometimes happens (depending on converter and trans) when unlocked and you kick it down which again unlocks the converter. The differential between engine speed and input shaft speed becomes too great (lack of fluid coupling) requiring the engine to rev up to and beyond the factory program limits in order to get the output shaft speed high enough to command a shift...

3 runs to 100 mph no babble so far...Been other changes to the truck since I run the other version, but I will plug it in for the trip home and see how it works.

Thanks Eric! Nowwe just need to get this in the hands of a couple more with known shifting issues to confirm. That and see if the previous version still acts up with your trans mods.

Would the update have any effect on how a stock trans will shift? I am still running the Big VA on a stock trans for now. Just curious. Thanks...

Stock trans and VA 200+ don't get along in the first place.

So any new updates on this testing? Just wanted to know how things are looking for updating the tunes to this box?

Tested it on a truck the other day and no babbling issues, BUT the trans shifted all kind of funky. Went thru the TAPS and it still wasn't quite right. It would flare and then hit the gear. It did not seem to want to learn. We then applied a zero tune, rpm increased and corrected tire size and it went fine. Not sure on the what or the why, but it went fine after that. I think it may have eventually learned, but the trans did not like the major increase in power over the previous setup (TST Powermax Comp) when the VA was installed. I didn't have time to wait so I applied the tune.

I've updated a few others recently and sent them back so hopefully they will land shortly and we'll see how they work...

Whatever happened with these revised tunes?

Kennedy

There are revised tunes that allow more RPM. The issue is that something else was changed and it does not follow the same curve as the tune that I prefer. The tune that I prefer does not allow extended RPM.

I don't look for VA to improve it any further. They screwed with me and I told them to piss off quite some time ago hence the transition back to "Imperial" HP ratings on their present boxes.

P.S. I kinda regret telling VA US what was wrong with the boost on LLY box, but at least they fixed it...

Now I'll have to work with the EFI Live to find a nice stack to straighten out the curve...
