I have a simple part that I need to make a 2D drawing of which can be saved in a DXF format to drive a CNC Plasma cutter. I have no need for an expensive AutoCad program. Does anyone have any recommendations on a free or cheap CAD program?

When I was in college, EVERYBODY had a copy of some version of Autocad. If you know anybody enrolled in college taking cad classes, ask around. I just threw away copies of 5 different previous versions.

If you could send me a sketch, I can draw it in ProE for you and save it as a DXF. I don't have it at home, but if it's a simple part I can do it for you for free....

A long time ago... back in the late '80's and early '90's... I used Generic Cadd. It worked very well, and I paid something like $100 for it. It was 2D only, but it did everything I needed. I see now though it's more like $499. I can tell you it's a very powerful CAD program... and worked flawlessly for me.

Adobe Illustrator 9 or higher can export both Autocad's native .DWG and .DXF file formats. There are other drawing programs that will also do this.
Illustrator 9 or 10 don't require complex registration in order to run.
You should be able to find it online pretty cheap or maybe even free if you know where to look, but if you can't PM me.

Google SketchUp is free. I haven't used it, but I know of others using it for 2D stuff.
