I'm looking into different scanner options to get me by for another year or two. I currently have a old Snap On MT2500 that serves me well up to 01'.
Now with my DMax, well it's a no go. My DMax is a 04 vin2 LLY my question is, is this a CAN computer system? If not I can get my hands on a VCI cartridge good up to 05' for around $100.
If it is CAN then the ole MT2500 is pretty much a paper weight from what I've read (even with the CAN to Serial) adaptor. Next would be what are my options? I've looked into EFILive but it's a bit costly for a scan tool for only GM and Cummins (I'm taking that you need the V2 even if you are just using it as a scanner).
Next one I've looked into was AutoEnginuity and it seem quite impressive but... I've found little as far as reviews of people actually using this software and none on it's capabilities for the DMax/Allison.
Any info would be great or any other options. Again just looking get by for a year or two but need to be able to diagnose my DMax
Thanks for the help!

not a can system too old for that and not high enough line. the cadillacs were the first gm's to use can but i think it was 05 or 06

That's good, makes my life a bit easier now.
Now another question... Anyone using a MT2500 on a LLY and any comments on it's capabilities? Right now I need to diagnose the fuel system (possible bad FPR) so I'll need to be able to read balance rates, rail pressure, and hopefully a cutout test.
Man I wish Snap On didn't stop supporting the ole red brick!

some of the tuners will let you read that info but the qzilla stealth will on read six injector for some reason. but dont know about the 2500.

I have an AutoEnginuity and for what I have needed..not much, it has served the purpose. It can read all the modules in the truck, ECM, TCM, radio, ABS, BCM, heater, left door module, about 11 in all on the '05 D/A. It can read balance rates, fuel/boost pressures that I know of. Can reset TAPs..Trany relearn deal. Have not used much else. It will only adjust module parameters while it is connected to the OBDII port,.... it's not a permanent programmer. But at an hours labour for the dealer to read codes, etc, three or four times pays for it. Get the basic cable and computer disk, and ALSO the GM specific unlock key to use on a GM vehicle.
I like it, and should learn a bit more of how it works.:D

I've got ScanXL with GM Enhancement and OBDLink interface (about $300) and use a laptop to run the software.
OBD Link supports ISO9141-2, ISO14230-4 (KWP2000), and ISO15765-4 (CAN).
I can connect to ECM, EBCM, TCM, and airbag modules and the user's manual says maybe read BCM codes. I'm not sure yet.
It will read/clear codes, configure/log data (balance rates, FRP, an extensive list of PIDs ), read freeze frame date and you can build graphs.
It has no bidirectional controls - can't cycle ABS or do relearns.....
It's done all I've asked of it so far.
It is clearly not as capable and not as expensive as AutoEnginuity reviewed by turnpike in post # 5.

Thanks for the info guys! Maybe I'll look into and ask around a bit more on the AutoEnginuity program. I know these programs have come a long way from when I last looked into them (early 2001). The biggest problem was the user interface. Most were a unsorted "spreadsheet" type format and very difficult to decipher what info was displayed. None aside from EFI and TunerCat and another third I can't remember that name of were di-directional.
Turnpike: How is their customer service? Also is this a subscription service? Meaning do you have to pay annually to keep the program or just pay for updates as your need them?
Thanks again for the info!

Although they're not cheap, I'd still suggest either an Edge Insight CTS or EFI V2 (you don't need EFI license for the scanner functions).

It is a purchase and use. For the '05s it is a mature product and no subscription is required. I do think you would have to pay for any up-dates but I don't think any are required.
The only contact I had with them was to purchase and they where friendly and knowledgeable.
