: About to install twin KD pumps and Nicktane! Have some ?'s
DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 12:32 PM Hi everyone...before my truck becomes "incapacitated" and taken apart is there any hardware store parts I am going to need? Fittings? Teflon tape? Bolts? I know I am going to need some wire for the KD pumps. Can I just wire the pumps in series? Or parallel? Should I switch them with the ignition or on another aux switch? The KD pumps ARE flow-thru right...so i wont need to plumb in a bypass correct? I am going to put the pumps BEFORE the Nicktane, as per JK's recommendation. How should I mount the pumps (I have a 2005 LLY crew-cab truck)?? Will I need any extra fuel hose? What sizes? Sorry for all the questions guys...I just want to make sure I cover all bases before im "not able" to go to the hardware store anymore!!!:) Because once the fuel lines are pulled, I dont want to run into a "DOH!! should have gotten one of those at the hardware store..." situation! I will take pictures during the install to help out anyone else who doing the install.
thanks in advance

ratlover 09-12-2005, 03:13 PM And as long as you pull the lines off with the lil lisle tool you can stick em back on and prime your system and go to the store for what ever you need. You could even have everything mounted and plumbed and wired up and just hook it up to the stock line last.
GMC-2002-Dmax 09-12-2005, 03:33 PM anyone??
Click on my PICS link, you will see the TTS Lift Pumps with the Nicktane Filter set-up on my own Custom bracket.
You want to plumb them one into another, use ample Teflon tape on all connections, solder and shrink wrap any electrical connections, you will have to FAB a Bracket for the KD PUMPS.
The Nicktane comes with only two Quick disconnect so you need to plumb from the tank with one to a barb connector 1/2" npt into the KD pump, one nipple 1/2" NPT as well and then the outlet hose goes to the Nicktane inlet then the outlet comes back to the steel line behind the fuel cooler.
I did not want to plumb the system with the long fuel lines so I re-located my filter and made up two short lines.

The NICKTANE is complete with all mounting brackets/hardware etc, as far as I know the KD lift pumps are left to the installer to make a mounting bracket up.........
I was simply pointing out that if you want to plumb the KD Lift pumps with a NICKTANE bracket to contact MACKIN here, he did a nice install with a Nicktane and some similiar fuel pumps that were all mounted on the Nicktane Filter assembly.
Shoot him a PM and see if he can send some info your way.........
Good Luck,

DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 06:16 PM Alright...I ended up mounting the KD pumps to that wierd flat plate thats welded to the frame crossmember thats kinda just to the right of the fuel tank. I drilled 4 holes in it and mounted the KD pumps to the bottom of it. Its directly above the driveshaft, but theres about about 8 inches between the driveshaft and bottoms of the pumps (blue part), so clearence isnt an issue. Is this ok??? Can I mount it to this plate? It doesnt look like its used for anything. Seems useless to me.

DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 06:20 PM Also...theres like 4 hoses that come out of my LLY tank. The BIGGEST quick connect one is the right one to remove and splice in the filter/pumps with right? Cause there was another big hose, but it was just put on with a hose clamp. I really appreciate all the help and fast answers guys, thanks again...my truck has to be back together tonight and I seem to be slooowwllyyy running out of daylight :-)

DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 06:27 PM Here is what Im talking about. (picture courtesy of Nicktane) I disconnected the hose that goes from the RED ARROW hose to the hard fuel line on the frame rail. I will splice in my pumps and Nicktane filter here. Right? Sorry for the dumb questions, i just want to make sure Im doing this right.

Kennedy 09-12-2005, 06:33 PM I just got back in. If you still need assistance, try calling Tuesday and I'll walk you thru it. On the LLY, I recommend the Trippin pickup and use the vent nipple for supply with 5/8" (-10) hose and move the vent to the old pickup nipple.
There are numerous possible configurations and plumbing possibilities available on the Dmax trucks.
DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 06:37 PM I think I got it all figured out, thanks John. I just wanted to double check that the location I had my Lift pumps mounted was OK. (that flat plate above the driveshaft to the side of the fuel tank) In the process of mangling my fuel tank shield, I kinda scrapped off some of the wax coating on that plate that I mounted the pumps to. What should I recover it with to prevent rust?? Im probably in the rust capitol of the world right now (Canton, New York) so I am going to need all the protection I can get..

Kennedy 09-12-2005, 07:53 PM If you click on the title of the lift pumps (where you ordered) you get the details page which has a couple of mounting options shown.
DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 08:08 PM Ok I did something stupid... I got the pumps mounted, pumbed and everything, but I already installed the Nicktane...and didnt make a note of which is the output and which is the inlet. Is the inlet the one that dumps into the "center" of the filter (like where it threads on? or does the inlet dump into the "perimeter" of the filter?? I really dont wanna have to unmount the nicktane bracket just to look at it...
thanks---ben
Mackin 09-12-2005, 08:26 PM Out (draw to the motor) through the center of the filter.
Quick clean set-up with a Nictane Perma Cool head and "old" style Nicktane bracket

DURAtotheMAX 09-12-2005, 09:56 PM Thanks Mackin....JUST GOT IT ALL DONE!!!!!!! woo-hoo! I did not wire up the pumps yet tho...They are all plumbed in (the KD pumps are flow-thru) but just not wired up. Ill take pictures tomorrow of where I mounted the pumps etc... Got a little nervous when I had to prime the fuel system because the engine didnt start right away. I had to prime the he!! out of it before the engine would catch. At least it beats priming an INdirect injected diesel! Now its time to do my first "engine" fuel filter change (that one is still 9000 miles dirty), but at least the Nicktane is clean. My PPE HOT Xcellerator comes tomorrow so I got the lift pumps up and [90%] running just in time. Cant wait! Thanks again for all the help guys, I would still be fumbling around in the dark if it werent for you!

Trippin 09-12-2005, 10:56 PM I don't see trans mods in your sig.
Be careful with your new PPE. :D
DURAtotheMAX 09-13-2005, 12:20 AM eh I dont care if I smoke the clutchpacks...I am going to rebuild it over thanksgiving break anyway (Suncoast IV)...but ill have fun destroying it until then:D .
