Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

I just voted no 2ndary filter and no injector problems.
Y'd have ta be darnright innumerate to b'leeve that this actually moved that category from 53.33% to 56.25% and that there is statistical significance to that.
So far the votes don't say a damned thing about the value of having a 2ndary filter, other than that people who come into this forum have a proclivity to add such accessories - and perhaps that people who don't come to this forum don't have problems anyway. In other words this is such a VERY selected population that the results can not be valid.

It averages all votes. Add all results together and you get 100%. Forget that part. Just go by number of instances.

Why dont you give this poll a little more time, it was only up for 45 minutes when you posted your message. Sure this may not be a statistically accurate poll, but it does give some idea of how widespread this problem could be, or perhaps someone should commission CNN/Gallup.

If nothing else, once everyone votes it will be damned interesting. There'll be a larger sample from the power mod group, which I bet would be smaller than a CNN/Gallup poll.

Remember you can't do this on some of those non-content Dmax sites. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

For those that vote "Secondary filter / Injector Issue", could you give details on when (miles) you installed the secondary filter and when you had the injector problems. Any other details would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

I have a 2003 GMC 2500 and just had 2 injectors replaced at 15,000miles. The shop recommended that i instal a secondary filter which i did and has done nothing but cause me problems so far. It keeps getting air into the system and won't start unless I prime it. Its a racor system ( I think). Has anybody else had these similar problems? Bought a diesel for its reliability and fuel mileage instead the truck has been in the shop for more than 25% of the four months that I have had it. Crank sensors, coolant leaks, and numerous electrical problems not to mention that when it is -30F these engines put out absolutly no heat for more than a hour of driving. I drive my truck over the roughest of roads and coldest of days and it hasn't held up very well. More sqeeks and rattles than you can imagine. Electrical problems come and go all the time. I was driving a Tundra before but needed more towing power for my TT. Got accustomed to the excellent fit and finish. Is it asking too much for a company that has been producing trucks for the last century to be able to fix the little things. GM has put over 5k into the truck already for warranty work - would this money not have been better spent on quality manufacturing than warranty work. 10% of the initial price has been used in warranty work and I only have half of the warranty mileage used up. Oh by the way when your truck comes with skid plates should it not come with one that covers up a very expensive transmission. In cold weather conditions be aware that you transmission linkage can freeze up and you can wreck the cable if you push up or down on the shifter. Are these not work trucks or were they made for only wonderfully warm and dry conditions and not the oil patch. Am I the only one who thinks this way about $50k trucks or what? Enough bitching for now. On the plus side these trucks start great in cold weather - have tons of power with the hypertech - and transmission works great.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif

I must admit, this poll does help reduce my ANXIETY about injector issues. With all the posts about injector issues, I was getting very paranoid. This is not to say that this is not a serious problem that needs to be addressed by GM. However, the numbers are not near as high as I though they would be. Maybe I still have some hope....

Installed the KD Mega, Post OEM, on my 2002, (built Oct 01), at 32K miles. Presently 38K, with absolutely no problems, and not worried. Use PFFP Total Power and Cetane every tank.

I own a 02 Duramx crewcab with 41000 miles. All stock. At 22000 miles I had 4 injectors replaced. Two more original injectors replaced at 32000 miles. Now at 41000 miles the same symptoms are back. Looks like another trip to the dealership.

What secondary filtration system is best for the job? Has anyone had a problem with warranty after 36000 miles? I have been told by the dealership that the injectors are covered under the 100000 mile engine warranty. I hope thats true since the injectors are about $500.00 per copy.

Thankshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

Blaine and all:

Well, on the one hand I feel like I won the freakin' bad juju lottery, but on the other, I am reassured that this issue maybe is not so prevalent as I first thought. Yes, there are some bad ones out there, but there are an AWFUL lot of perfectly fines ones (I know many are saying, "So far").

My vote is still out, as I have not heard any definitive word from the dealer yet.

It sucks to be this lucky. http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

"...of those who responded to the survey"

What is still wrong with this poll is that it doesn't represent the people who don't frequent this forum (OBVIOUSLY). The people who DO frequent this forum are more concerned with these issues than those who don't, to the point that they (we, I'll be inclusive) might well be fixing what ain't broke. To be valid you would need high mileage vehicles both with and without supplementary filtration and you would need a lot of them if you wanted to place any faith in the results.

Well, I just spoke with my dealer. He says injector/s, so I added my vote to the last category. Needless to say, I feel pretty luckyhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif.

mbeckwith:

Details on mine. 2003 GMC built May '03 and bought July '03. Nicktane installed at 4000. Factory OEM and Nicktane cahnged at 13.5K (both looked to have at least 50% life left. Injector went out at 14,400.

The dealer is saving oil and fuel samples. Maybe that will give us some added info down the line.

38,000 without sec. filter 12,000 with it. and no injector problems, I check using the predator (that`s about all it`s good for now) once in a while, and the balance rate once warmed up is always in the -.250 and +.275. They say + or - 3 is real good and + or - 6 is within tolerance.

I have always used some type of power enhancement on my truck. Well all but about 1600-1700 miles.

GBusch; I run the racor 660 2 micro filter setup on top the engine, and other the no starts once it had 10,000 miles and it set for two day or longer. I would have to bleed it in order for it to start.

I changed the filter, and that problem has went away. I figured it was getting plugged up, and needed changed.

Rick,

Thanks for responding to my injector failure w/ secondary filter question. Your feedback isn't what I wanted to hear, but sometimes the truth hurts.

I was only expecting those w/ secondary filters to have failures when they didn't install the secondary filter until much higher mileage. Since you installed at 4k, I would think that it's REALLY an injector issue and not just a dirty diesel issue.

I still do believe that secondary filters mitigate injector issues, but they do not eliminate the problem. As soon as my LLY arrives... a secondary filter will be installed.Edited by: mbeckwith
