Broker, glad to see that your over on this board too.

What sort of filter system did you use??

I'm trying to decide whether I should go with a Nicktane or Racor type kit. Water seperation/detection is a concern with the Nicktane kit...I think. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Installed the KD Mega, Post OEM, on my 2002, (built Oct 01), at 32K miles. Presently 38K, with absolutely no problems, and not worried. Use PFFP Total Power and Cetane every tank.

I installed the KD Mega Post OEM at 73K miles. Presently 77K with absolutely no problems on my 08/01 built 2001. Use FPPF Total Power in every tank.

I just sent in for the group buy. After reading so much about the different systems, figured I can't go wrong with the cat filter. But I voted no because I don't have it yet.

Filter technology has come along ways very recently. It was just a few short years ago that under 15um was considered great. Then it went the 8 to 12 range. Even Cat was touting these standards. We as a whole are right smack dab in the middle of the latest filter revolution. We are evolving to a 2uc standard. It will not be long untill every diesel high pressure system comes with effecient 2uc systems. GM was not really irresponsible in my opinion. The filter they installed on the Dmax was up to industry standards at the time. They are not to blame. Has anyone done a new fuel sample coming out of the LLY while installed on the truck? Maybe they have stepped up to the plate. Maybe just a small improvement? I am curious to know.

Just received my Nicktane the other day (from the group buy). Now I just need some time to install it.

I am running John Kennedy's Mega. It seems to have improved my mileage a tad, and it definitely makes my truck run more quietly. I have it installed pre-OEM and have had no isseus with air. In fact--after the initial install bleed, I have never been able to bleld any air out of my system with either the factory or the Mega bleeder. I did have a raw diesel smeel for a while, but that turned out to be the water seperator on the OEM filter being a little loose.

Talked to a lot of Dmax owners down here in Florida, have yet to meet anyone with an aux filter installed. When asked about changing fuel filters, most say 15,000. One guy said he had 44,000 on, and had not changed his yet!

what is the rule of thumb on how often the fuel filter should be changed and what is the best replacement brand?

The owners manual says 15,000 miles but I think a lot of people on this forum have decided every 10,000 miles is a better idea.

It doesn't matter which brand you buy, they are all the same filter made by Racor. They are relabeled by the different filter companies. Look for the cheapest one and buy it.
