Hi all! I am new to the site and really new to diesel power.

I have a line on a used 2001 GMC SIERRA 2500HD CREW CAB

Here's part of the ad:

It's white with 49,500 mi, leath int, 4X4, p/seats, auto, fully loaded, running boards, bed cover, bed mat, brake control, dual exhaust, every option, 2yrs left on GM warranty bumper to bumper, like new.

I spoke with the owner on the phone and will go see it in the next few days time permitting.

He is a retiree and a hell of a nice fellow.

He has mainly used it to tow his pro-street drag car to the track and back (total tow wieght of about 7000 lbs) and has made a couple of long trips with it.

When I asked him how he liked the truck he told me that he liked it so much he bought another, brand new, one just like it and that was why he was selling his old one.

He had a lot of good things to say and was quite adamant that even if I didn't end up buying his I should definitely buy a duramax powered Chevy/GMC. ):h ):h ):h

BTW, I agree with him on that point.

Anyway, he's asking $26, 500 or best offer (which I assume means the price is negotiable).

How is this price for this truck? I don't know if it has a long bed or not.

Is this engine (again, I am assuming it's the 6.6 liter) worth getting or should I look at a newer used model?

Any advice or help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Well, it would be out of the original 36k bumper to bumper warranty as that was 3 years or 36k, whichever comes first.

Most extended warrantys run up to 75,000 and 5 years. So, keep in mind how many miles per year you drive as to wether or not you'll get 2 more years out of the extended warranty.

26500 seems a little high. I didn't check, but look at kbb.com and/or edmunds.com

Look at the TRADE-In value and private party value, you should be able to make him an offer in between that as I assume he is private party selling it because he was not satisfied with what the dealer was going to give him trade-in value for it.

The LB7 engine was put in 2001s through 2004.5s In 2004.5 to 2005 they switched to the LLY which is just a few minor changes.

Oh, damn.

I thought the '01 - '02 had the 7/70 warranty.

Yes, I found out it does still have the balence of a 7/70 warranty.

All '01' and '02's do.

Like Heartbeat says ~ bought mine new

There is a $100 deductible on the 100K/5yr eng coverage tho. It applies after the basic 36K/3yr is finished.

Sorry, Andrew.

I'm new to the warranties on these and was wrong.

Thanks Heartbeat and ShumDit.

I'll ask again.

I'm probably misunderstood him.

He may have been referring to an extended warranty he bought but I am not sure if it's transferrable.

Either way, I'll be sure to ask.

My '02 had the general warranty of 3/36 and 5/100K for engine and 5/200K injectors. Good luck.

JP's info matches what we have on our early '02 ... it originally came with the 3yr/36K truck and a 5yr/100K engine warranty with deductable after 36,000 miles ... GM later extended the injector warranty to 7yrs/200K miles ... currently have over 100,000 miles on the truck and never have had to have any warranty work done on the engine/transmission but I am sure glad to have the letter extending the injector warranty in the glove box:ro)

Check the transfer case for leak. If it has warranty and is leaking get the cover or case replaced. Known issue.

Thanks guys.

I am still trying to figure a good price.

From the sources mentioned here they say $19,900.

But that's around $6000 less than the asking price.

What am I missing?

Yeah, if i had to guess I'd say 26500 is kinda high...

As an example, I traded my 01 with 72,000 on the ticker for $22,000 over a year ago. That was a great price for a trade. Expect to pay a few grand more if buying private.

I think you should be in the 20,000 or less range. It is almost five years old. Don't hesitate to walk and look for another.

Thanks Hoot!!

After hearing about how so many '01 and '02 owners were sorry that the sold the old truck, how it was the best truck they had and would take it back over the new one, I was worried that I had missed the boat on a great truck.

So, I started looking for used '01 and '02 trucks.

I felt the same way you did, Hoot,(get a lower price or walk) about this truck after I used the resources mentioned here.

I was not certain that I had the right idea about this but now I feel a little more confident. Thanks for your input. It makes me feel like I'm not crazy after all.

I just couldn't help wondering if there was something I was missing about this truck that would justify that kind of used price.

If all the prices of these used models are this high in my area I may as well consider buying new.

like the rest have said, that's a high price. That's probably a good 4-5000 over KBB price.
