I've decided to get the MSD propane system and now I need to figure out a tank setup.

I'm kind of stuck on what kind of tank to get. I want to mount it between the frame rails under the truck. Bed mounting isn't really an option.

I've seen some of the manifold type tanks that have brackets built on them. They're nice but they seem pretty pricey.

A forklift tank would be a good size but can you mount one under the truck? If so how would be the best way to mount it? And if I mount a forklift tank underneath, is it still possible to fill it without taking it out?

If anyone can give me any tips I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks!

A true forklift tank (aluminum) is not meant to be mounted under the vehicle. Remember a forklift never sees or is supposed to see the open road so the tanks dont have to be as strong as the ASME/DOT tanks. In the bed, protected they should be fine.

What about some sort of a skid plate to go over the tank? I know I'd certainly feel better about it if there was some sort of protective plate over it.

Tanks that are meant to be mounted under the vehicle wouldn't require a plate because they are 3 steel wall thick and virtually puncture proof. Some put a skid plate in to protect the valving etc.
To protect an aluminum tank there, it would have to be a very heavy duty and very thick skid plate but still would not be safe. Aluminum fork lift tanks are not meant to be on the road that is why they are not used in RV's or motorhomes for example.
Buy the proper tank for the frame rail application or if you want a forklift tank simply put it in the bed, for example in a toolbox.

Don't try to save pennies on tanks or systems at the expense of your safety or your vehicle. We want everyone to be safe:ro)

Mitch, you can get a 7.9 gal (LP capacity) that will mount under the cab on the driver's side. The tank measures 10X32. I am trying to figure out from all these posts what lp burn rate will give the best mileage and lowest overall cost. If I have to get a bigger tank, I will mount mine in the bed and finish installing a 14 gal aux. diesel tank under the cab.
I would check with Wasatch propane for a tank. They had a couple of used 12" diameter tanks that would fit if you have a body lift for $100 when I was there 2 weeks ago.
