If you buy this, you'll need EFILive, or someone who has it & a spare license, to reprogram the ECM to work with your van.

Lots of tuners (e.g.: Rob at atptrucks.com or Nick at Duramaxtuner.com) sell reprogrammed performance-optimized ECMs, probably for less than an oem ecm from a dealer.

You should be able to get a new ECM for under $ 400.

Get with one of the EFILive tuners like Nick from DuramaxTuner and get an ECM through them. You can probably send them the ECM and they can see if it can be fixed and maybe get a bit of money back on a core.

So the ECM was not bad?? Hope the dealer is not charging you labor for something that was not broke. It's a shame that when something has gone bad and they can't figure it out they blame the ecm. I know on older vehicles you can take the ground cable of the battery and if the engine continues to run the alt is good, as for the newer stuff I do not know if that will work.

For starters...get a multi meter, with the engine running you should have above 13 volts and below 15. You should see this at the battery and at the big terminal on the alt.

A good scan tool will also tell you the commanded duty cycle of the alternator (ie is the ecm "telling" the alternator to do something).

Your charging issue is likely something basic......not ecm related. I agree with 60MPH, dealers are in a rush to blame ECM's when they rarely are the issue. Check the basics, cables, connections, grounds etc.

Glow plugs are an easy fix too.

My battery cables were corroded, the bottom outside battery was dead and not even connected . Altenator was fine,so I would check that first also.
