Its got 89000 miles on it. What should I look for and look out for? Its in a 01 GMC 2500HD CCSB 4X4

Im looking at buying it. Im also looking at a 04 Chevy 2500HD Duramax. But Im not fond of the Chevy front end. I really like the GMC front end better. I know the 04 is the better choice as far as engines but I just cant get over the front end. Not to mention the price difference.

:ro) Look to see if the injectors have been replaced. Mine were on my 01 2 weeks before I bought it. Also look for signs of hard use such as the condition of the bed and if it has a fifthwheel hitch. This doesn't really mean it was beat on, but just it was used for what it is designed for. The lb7 is also a great engine. Once you get past the injector replacement, troubles seem to drop off. I have 117,000 on mine and it runs like she is new.

I knew about the injectors and Im getting a car fax on it in the morning. Does the 01 have the Allison in it as well? I didnt know if it came with the Allison Tranny in 01.

Yup all duramax trucks automatic trucks are Allys. I own a 2001 with 107K on it and couldn't be happier. The 01 LB7 is a great motor. The injector thing is a concern but I think it is over blown. Keep the filter chaged and a good fuel additive in it for lubricity and you will have no problem.

The 01's had no pollution control on them at all.....free flowing and blowing....simple is good.

There are plenty of posts on this site about modifications for more power, better towing, high idle etc. Chekc back and search often you will learn a bunch

Go with the 01, change all the fluids right away and enjoy

Have the VIN checked the "VIN Check Request" Section.

This will tell you what warranty work has been done on it.

we have an early '02 which has the same engine/injectors/transmission and such as the '01 ... turned over 100,000 miles last week with zero engine/transmission issues to date .... the injector warranty on these trucks has been extended to 7 years/200,000 miles, don't know if that is only to original owner or not ... I completely agree with the recommendation to provide good fuel filtration and additive ... I've been well pleased with the post-OEM Mega fuel filter and FPPF Total Power additive I've been using in my truck since around 20,000 miles

Here's some bad ...check for leaks at the transfer case. A design flaw causes a spring to work a pin sized hole from the inside. TC leaks and will run dry, eventually this destroys the tc.. Have fluid checked, if low add atf and test drive then let sit, check again next am. New case cover is around $800 reman tc is ~$2g.

What Paul said. I just spent $2000 on a transfer case and installation because of that design flaw.

As for the '04, I put a Putco insert in the grill. Makes it look alot better and very similar to the GMC.

Out of curiosity, why is the '04 engine better?

I thought the '01-02 engine was the one to get if you were getting a used vehicle.

:) Yup. I did a vin check and found out my truck got a new transfer case, all 8 injectors replaced and a new fuel rail pressure switch 10,000 miles before I bought it. Good news for me!!!

Where did you do a VIN check. I ran a carfax on a couple and they said that various service was done and that was it.
