Try turning it off and back on a few times. You have limped the trans. Otherwise, it will take a Tech II to reset it.

My truck did a similar thing about 3 months ago. The ALLY went into limp. IT stays in 3rd so you can drive it. Wen checked out it was determined that it was not getting the 12V it needed. All it ended up being was a loose Neg cable on the drivers side battery. Hope this helps.
