I'm thinking of puting a 6.2 into my 71 truck, has anyone done this to one of the older trucks? It has a New Process 540 transmission so that end should be easy, what I'm not sure about is the engine mounts, gas V8 engine mounts work? Also it has a cable for the gas so other than getting the right length that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm doing this now, except mine is going in a '67 C-30 Dually pickup. It is a straight forward set-up. Any GM transmission (auto or std) will bolt up to a 6.2, and the motor mounts are the same as SBC. You will need to changeover the hydraboost (which is easy) or get the newer style vac pump if you want PS and PB. You can even use your coil wire to energize the the injection pump. Here is a pic of a '72 Chevy with a 6.2 Looks nice in there huh??

Should be a nice swap, keep us all up to date with pics. I did a '78 K5 up with a 6.2L, built up 700r4, np 208 tx case, was a nice, powerfull and much better on fuel than the 350 that came out after it went boom.

This is a pic of the truck I am building, and pic of what I am going for (excuse my crappy amateur Photoshop work)! The last couple of pics are of a few other duallys similiar to mine that I have found on the net.

What is the "new style" vacuum pump and how is it hooked up? I guess what I am asking is it hooked up to the IP, driven by a belt or ?

Thanks
Richard.

The on my engine is belt driven. The rear mounted one may work as well, but for some reason I was thinking it wouldn't because it didn't have enough vacuum.

So it is like a small a/c compressor - smog pump thing. Got a picture?

I was looking at my 6.5 and I didn't see any place for the clutch pivot to attach to, my truck is a 6 cly that had a 4 speed which I changed out to a 5 speed. What year exhaust manifolds would fit best?

I put a 1984 6.2L in my 1970 Chev C20. At that time I had the 350 Auto and I had to change the bell housing for the starter to fit. I had to fabricate my own engine mounts since the 350 gas mounts or the 1984 diesel mounts wouldn't work. The good news was that I had to buy an arc welder to make the mounts.

My 1970 had the fuel tank in the cab. I had to add a fuel return line to the tank since tne 350 gasser did not have one. I also put a 33 gal. tank out of a 1984 G20 van in place of the spare tire. I also transferred that tank to my 1986 Chev C30. I can go 700 miles on the 53 gals. of fuel!!! I have a 20 gal. passenger tank too, but I put gasoline in it for our Onan generator in our camper. If I had diesel in it then I could go almost 1,000 miles!!!!

To make the mounts, I bolted the engine to the trans. and lowered the engine (on the hoist) to the proper height, measured the distances, and fabricated the mounts. Too bad I threw the mounts away when we moved from Washington as you could have used them. I have the engine in my 1986 Chev C30 dually now. That conversion was much, much easier.

When the 350 auto played out then I put in a manual trans. and I had to cut the driveline. I also had to fabricate my own clutch linkage when I changed from auto to manual.

I had a radiator shop add different fittings to my 1970 radiator to fit the 6.2L hoses. I also had to modify the fan shroud.

Have fun!!!!

I went out to my local research library (junkyard) and looked at some 6.2s, the early 80s had a boss drilled and tapped between the oil cooler lines. I think it was for the clutch pivot, does anyone know when they stopped putting it on? My 93 doesn't have it. Are the early blocks any good to rebuild?

I guess if you like all GM a 6.2l would work, but me personally,a CTD. That's what I'm planning on doing with my 67' K30.:)

Old thread but need to know if this is doable. I just aquired a 1971 GMC 4x4 pickup and would like to put my 85 6.2 military engine in it. I will also use the original TH400 and 208 that came in the cucv. My concerns are:

1. crossmember where the motormounts go. Will the 6.2 oil pan clear? will the motor mounts bolt up?
2. return line to tank behind seat. How is that easily accomplished? drill????JB weld?

Thanks in advance.

for the enine mounts use SBC mounts and it will bolt right in for the return the best thing to do is weld a return line in the filler neck. got to CK5.comm and they have a section devoted to this swap.
