I have a friend who is looking for one also. Everyone that I know that has an 02 will not part with it. Same way I feel about my 01. Same truck, different year.

Probably not rare, but it was a good year to get a dmax.......mine has been great and I have not seen that many for sale locally either.

Trout, I don't know where you are located, but I did a quick search on Autotrader.com and it came back with 668 2500's and 179 3500's. That's the whole country, but there should be at least one within driving distance of where you are.

thanks im going there now, I called 5 ( five) dealerships here in DENVER and they only had (2) used duramax's combined. and they were both 03'.

only could find 7 NEW duramaxes and 2 used, that is amazing. Says something about what people think of them.

Why do you specifically want an '02? The reason I ask is that maybe we can give you some info that would open up some doors on other years also.

Just bought the wife an 02 3500.
Was looking at all of the local Chev/GMC dealers but found this one at a Ford dealer.

well as for the 02'

I like the LB7, and I was under the impression that the 02' had a 200K mile warranty on the injectors, and the 03' only had a 100K mile warranty.

also, I like the front end of the 02 better, and i figured it would be cheaper.

if the 03' also has an extended warranty on the injectors then i would also consider an 03'.

im nota fan of the LLY, too many overheating issues. Plus i just dont NEED all the power. Im coming from a 5.3L gasser in the 99' 1500 format.

reasons for wanting a Diesel

1. Power;)
2. ability to use alternative fuels if a so choose( or the government chooses for me, another topic for another day)
3. longevity
4 MPG

I figure i have 10K+ worth of money in my current 99' 1500 EXT cab 4X4 5.3L V8 for trade.

I have $16,000 cash, so im looking to get a Diesel with the truck and cash combination. I cant buy NEW, my wife wants a quiet engine( so no cummins) so that put me at an 02' Duramax!

long answer im sorry, just giving you all my thoughts.

thanks

trout74-IF you are in Denver you are somewhat near here. About 200 or so miles. Our dealer has at least one 02 on the lot. It's an LT with 53000 or so miles on it. It has 285 big o XT tires on it and a chrome grilleguard, b&w flipover ball hitch, rhino liner... Nice truck, it was pretty snappy, seemed to run good. It has all the service records in the console unless someone stole them since we test drove it. The guy that owned it before got it serviced a lot.

Coincidently, since you say you think you have about 26k to spend on it, I think that's about what they want for it... My brother would have bought it but they wouldn't take his lifted truck in trade, they didn't think they could sell it.

The place is Bob Ruwart Motors. 1 800 262 3146
Ask for Quent, he's a decent guy. If he asks where you heard about the truck tell him Nick told you.

I ordered my 02, 11/01. I rec'vd it of the last production run may 02 ~ a full 6mos! So ~ perhaps they could be a mite scarce just as they were then? There were issues w/production & availability of allisons. Then GM didn't want to produce many manual 6 spds nor extra cabs. Dealers were on allocation system ~ engine production was still ramping up and they wanted/needed to phase in/divert production to support the med duty line of trucks. There was a bypass market wherein canadian leased trucks (mostly 01s) were sold/returned here. The market was HUNGRY. I recall seeing more than a few posts of guys having their orders xncld or rolled over to the 03 production run. Dealers were holding to MSRP or MSRP+. Guess the point I'm trying to make is: there were production limitations & scarcity in the market place ~ then they changed body styles.

You want an 02?

You want a good thing

I wouldn't go even-steven on a newer one even (was that a pun?). However, I do find the LBZ w/6spd allison intriguing.

I've got an '03 4x4 crew cab on my lot, but I'm in North Carolina...;)

Keep looking, tho. I have a hunch that when the LBZ hits, you'll see some older dmax's on pre-owned lots.

$26K??? that's a bit on the steep side for an '02.

If you're willing to drive a little bit, run a cars.com or autotrader.com search for Texas. I bet you'll find a similar truck for $22K or less.

Hehe, the '05 chebbies?

It's my '02 hood smashed onto that dagnabbin' crapalanche grille. Still sucks, although I will admit it's not as bad as the '03-'04s. Like from fugly to ugly.

If you don't mind driving to Detroit, they sell them cheap up there. I was up there a couple months ago and picked up a used car/truck magazine. I swear they were $2k-$3k less than they are around here.

Hey, hey now!!!:D I say that the avalanche grill looks better on the HD's than it does on the 1/2 tons. It looks better with a crew cab. But, reluctantly, I agree...I like the 01-02 front end better.:exactly:

On topic, where is the original poster located at. There are two for sale here on a dealers lot. One is a blue 2002 ext. cab with a 6 speed, and 108,000 miles. He wants 26,500 for it. Hmm, sounds a tad 'spensive to me. The other is a green 2002 crew cab with the Allison and 55,000 miles. My dad looked at that one at another dealer, and they couldn't sell it. He said it smelled funny inside. I guess they took it to auction and this guy bought it. They want 29,500 for it. That too seems 'spensive to me.

Have a good one!!

You know, they're not that bad, I guess.

I'm OK with the '03+ head-on view. Looks agressive and all. Kinda sorta maybe badass.

But the side view makes the truck look dumb....it looks like a nosepiece tacked on. And there's little/no wraparound....kinda looks like something from the early 80s. Boxy.

Hail to the old skool!

You're all right, mine looks better and better each new model year!

Definately not getting rid of my '02

Works great, good fuel economy, less electrons running the show, runs cool, paint still shiny etc.

Makes some cool turbo noises too!

Dude, on the '03s, I'm tellin' ya, we're going to look back 20 years from now and say "WTF were they thinking???!"

'02 was the last good looking Chebby. Period.

If it weren't for the moron who designed the Avalanche, that front end wouldn't exist.

I gotta say the chev hd trucks 03-05 don't look near as bad as the avalanche. I've seen some dressed up that look very good. The new fronts with the raised hoods are better but still not the 01-02 muscle truck looks. That was a look they should've stayed with longer. A guy I work with has dmax lust- loves my truck but when he buys it'll be gmc cause he hates the chevs looks newer than mine. I said just get the D/A ...the rest is personal cosmetology.

This has been a fun thread to read - I guess 'cause I bought an '02 and just love it. I was on the lot and test drove an '03 when the dealer said he could only give me 36 months no interest on the '03 and 60 month no interest on the '02. I drove the last 02' off the lot. As far as the front end's???? If I had wanted an avalance I'd of bought one. I've always thought the '01/'02 hoods were kind of retro to the older chevy trucks. I've also noticed the '05's have gone back to the raised hood. Go figure. Wouldn't trade my 02 fer nuthin!

Well i went and drove used trucks this weekend, even put an offer on one, but they told me to pound sand!

I drove an 02' an 03' and an 06', all chevy's.

My impression, I could not buy an LB7 after drivng the 06'. for ME, the LB7 was turd off the line and not very responsive. I mashed that peddle 10 times to the floor and even with the turbo singing, it just didnt feel like it was pulling hard to me. TO be truthful( and I know it probably not true) but my 5.3 gasser with a locking rear end, felt like it had more get up and go than the LB7, I was not impressed.

THe LLY in the 6speed tranny............just blew my doors off. This is the second time i have driven the 06' and it just flat out hauls. I cant believe the response, it is immediate. I love it, just cant afford it, they wouldnt take my offer. The Sticker for the Employee price was 38K and change. I offered 32K even, the exact price my mechanic paid for a fully laoded 05' and they told me to takea a hike, so I did........

I'm a big fan of my 02 gmc, i really like the crome grills they came with from the factory, but I also like the 01-02 chevy's too. The 03 to current are growing on me, but I still think the GMC's look a little better than the avalanche style does...but really, it's the rig, not the appearance that keeps me coming back. I'll be honest though, I'd sell my 6 speed for an 02 allison in a heart beat...if I could find one priced below 30,000  . All the dealers with 02's in my area want 30,000 or more for them, and they all have 80,000 miles on them...

I love my 02 crew cab :ro) but everything is for sale for the right price! Ha Ha
Mine actually came from TX and I paid a few thousand less than what they were going for up here in St. Louis. Not sure if it helps at all but just another place to look if you can make the trip.

Oh yeah and the 02 front ends are WAY better looking than the “cat eyes” of the 03 and up front ends. who likes cats anyway? :joke:
