: Fuel injector cleaning?

Has anyone ever heard of a GM required 30K mile interval Stenadyne fuel injector cleaning from the dealer? I think I am having injector problems with my 2002 Duramax (knocking noise at idle). The dealer says to bring it in for fuel injector cleaning and well go from there. I am suspicious, it sounds like a typical dealer money making scheme.

Thanks,

I have the same knocking noise after my 2nd set of injectors. I took it in for that problem, but they said it is a characteristic of the injectors and that there is nothing wrong. They put that stanadyne stuff in mine too, but no difference. GM actually has a directive out for this and the dealer showed it to me when I went to pick up my vehicle. They said its the noise being made by the injectors opening and closing. Dont know how legit it is, but they refused to do anything else for me.

I use Stanadyne additives with every fill up and since I started, my truck does runs better. I don't know if this is what they are talking about or what. I like stanadyne but like all additives I believe it is something that works over time not over night. I would ask the dealer to be more specific about what he is talking about.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. Btw, my balance rate on the #1 injector was around 4.0 last time I checked it, likely the one making the racket. They can do their little injector cleanin deal as long as it doesn't cost me a bunch of $$$, need to get a couple of the recalls taken care of anyway.

Hey Eric, if it comes down to it, can you perform warranty injector installs on Chevy's? It would be a long drive, but knowing that it would get done right is worth it in my book.

Anyone know a dealer in Central Texas (anywhere in Texas for that matter) with outstanding service personnel?

Tim,

I had really good service out of the people at Lone Star Chevy on HWY 290 in Northwest Houston. Tom Ryan is the Service Writer/Director on the Commercial side(not fleet/lease). He has some very good diesel techs on that side.

Andy,

Thanks for the info. If I don't have a pleasant dealer experience, I'll give Tom a call.

Yep, scheme is right, no doubt.

Took it in, of course the loud injector was quiet, said to bring it back when it's noisy. Huh? What about hooking it up a Tech-2 and checking the balance rates? Nope, can't do that.

First thing he said was that, oh you don't have a warranty anymore w/ "all the aftermarket products" on this truck. I said, BS, and nope everything that's on here is for extending the life of my vehicle (larger exhaust for cooling, gauges for safety, oilguard for longer engine life, and extra fuel filter (pre OEM) for making the injectors last longer). That wasn't good enough, he had to poke around looking, but hey, whatever dude...

Then he proceeded to tell me about their $180 injector cleaning job where they hook up a special canister to the fuel line and burn this special Stenadyne cleaner and clean the injectors. And that I should be running Stenadyne injector additive in my fuel, blah blah blah... I run FPPF, but he never heard of that or seemed to know anything about emulsifiers vs demulsifiers etc, so I didn't volunteer that I run it (he seemed like the type that would void my warranty on the spot if I said anything). I said if I run Stenadyne which demulsifies the water, where does the water go since there isn't a water separator on a Duramax? His reply was that the fuel filter takes care of that along with the WIF sensor. Ok buddy, whatever...

Just about what I expected. Typical for me with my history of dealing with dealer service folks... :-(

When I read this I couldn't help feeling sorry for all the people out there who do not have the time or desire or awareness to get on this forum and educate themselves about their vehicles enough to toss out a BS flag when a dealer like this tries to take their money. To some extent, this comes under the 'a fool and his money rule,' but think of all the honest people this guy would soak for a $180 "injector cleaning," which sounds like nothing more than a $4.00 bottle of additive. I'd say we should start a sticky "Dealers who lie, cheat, and steal" thread somewhere, but the people who really need it aren't on this board anyway....

TimNot exactly central Texas, but Lone Star GMC in Mckinney treated me very well. They have a top notch Service Dept IMHO.
