: 4 Speed Hydra-Matic auto behind DMAX?
Bobcat698 09-06-2005, 01:13 PM Was just at the Chevy site checking a few things out..
Read this page:

"For production units through Sept. 2005 with the Allison six-speed automatic transmission:
310 horsepower @ 3000 rpm
605 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1600 rpm
For production units after Sept. 2005 with the Allison six-speed automatic transmission:
360 horsepower @ 3000 rpm
650 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1600 rpm
With the Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission:
310 horsepower @ 3000 rpm
605 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1600 rpm
With the ZF six-speed manual transmission:
300 horsepower @ 3000 rpm
520 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1600 rpm"
Since when do they put the 4 speed auto behind a Duramax?
Or am I just behind on times?
Goldsburg 09-06-2005, 01:36 PM A 4L80(85)E behind a DMax...?
Maybe a :wtf1: or a :cookoo: is more appropriate!
I hope this was a mis-print...
DURAtotheMAX 09-06-2005, 01:37 PM They are referring to the 2006 Savanna/Express vans that can be optioned with the Duramax. Theres no room for an Allison, so they use a strengthend 4L80-E. Although im pretty sure that HP/TQ rating for the Savanna/Express Dmax's is a typo too...theres no way a 4L80 could deal with 310 hp and, more importantly, 605 ft. lbs of torque. I think the Duramax's that are going into the vans/4L80-E's are getting detuned to ~450 ft. lbs of torque.

thefermanator 09-06-2005, 02:29 PM Unless they have a company like hughes do the transmissions. I believe they claim the 4L80 can hold 1,000 HP & 1,000 LB FT torque. I realize that I'm talking about a heavily modified race built unit. But I have heard of people putting the 4L80 up against some high output cummins with great success. The biggest downfalls would be the lack of torque multiplication(4 speed VS 6 speed), and you're relying on a heavily modified trans.
keith_2500hd 09-06-2005, 10:07 PM remember back HP supposed to be 260 HP, when first reported Duramax in vans.
briano 09-06-2005, 11:59 PM the 6.0 comes with the 4L80 and its rated at 300/360 for the 05's..I think the power went up for 06. thats a strong tranny, but isn't as solid as the Ally.

Sheesh..guess the factory 320HP/450 Ft Lb rating of the 496 in my Avalanche is a bit optimistic. And the 12,500 lbs tow rating too! :Wedgie:

I have lots of pics! Too bad GM doesn't offer the D/A with the Avalanche, or I'd have one in my garage right now.

Burner 09-07-2005, 02:51 AM Maybe the Van is getting the 4L85E like the 8.1 liter 3/4 Yukon XL or Suburban?
Chris, the low TQ is what kills the trans not the high RPM TQ. There are several folks out that give warranty's on high HP 4L80's and 85's.... but when ya hook a high HP Diesel to it, the warranty is lost.

True. The 4L80/85E is a well refined trans that's been around for a long time. It definitely can't handle the torque from the Duramax diesel, especially a modified one! Thankfully GM has the Allison transmission, and didn't try to beef up the 4L85E further like Dodge has beefed up their automatic to handle the Cummins' torque.
I had a somewhat 'massaged' 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, Cummins with the NV4500. I had an early Edge box, and installed Bosch 275 injectors. It was enough to slip the clutch in 4th and 5th when the air was cold and dense, not towing anything..just accelerating hard at peak torque. Even shifting that big 5 speed (dumped the boost, had to respool the turbo, which lost time) it ran a 15.2 @ 92 MPH 1/4 mile.):h
This Avalanche is the 3rd vehicle I've owned with a 4L80. My first was a 1994 Chevy K2500 6.5 TD, and I also owned a 2001 GMC Yukon XL K2500 with the 8.1.
agent614 09-08-2005, 10:42 AM yeah the Express 2500 3500's are getting the dmax....260 hp /450 torque. want to know if anyone has seen one yet or more importantly drove one. I am in need of a 2500 and will posssibly buy one. i am interested to know what the fuel mileage will be with one of these units. and it does come mated to the 4L80-E. right now i have my salesman doin the checking for me.....anyone want my 05 crew 4x4 w/ 5600 miles on it?

wow.....lot's of eye candy. Your 496 Avalanche drive like a MONSTER.
:eek2:
sduramax 09-09-2005, 10:20 AM the avalanche will get the d/a in 06.5 read it on gm inside news when it comes out i will own one myself conary yellow on 35's
DURAtotheMAX 09-09-2005, 11:49 AM It may get a Duramax...but I doubt it will get the Allison. They would have to put the body lift on it which increases driving and stability concerns. Thats why they havent put it in the Suburban yet...

Burner 09-09-2005, 02:19 PM You guys know that the *first* production Dmax trucks had a 4L85E, right?
Searay90 09-09-2005, 03:40 PM You guys know that the *first* production Dmax trucks had a 4L85E, right?
No  Were these sold to the public, or just "test" trucks that were destroyed?
Burner 09-09-2005, 03:52 PM VERY limited first production. I would not believe it had I not seen a white regular cab LB some years ago.
thefermanator 09-09-2005, 04:48 PM A friend of mine whoo services alot of fleet vans says that fleet's have had the duramax vans for about 6 monthsand they are working out great.
RAPIDRYAN 09-09-2005, 07:49 PM The Vans Are Getting Lb7 Duramax W/the 4l80 Trans. Hold Your Breath Because There Are Rumors Of The Duramax Being Offered In The 2500 Avalanche.
