I have a 96 suburban with 6.5 diesel. I changed the water pump, and thermostat. I'm now having trouble bleeding all the air out of the system. I have it to the point that everything seems to work well with the engine running at 1500-2000 rpm. at idle, the temp gauge climbs, pressure builds up, and the coolant blows out the bottle. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening. I don't think it is a cracked head because the coolant and oil both look good. any help greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you got the right water pump? The direction of rotation is different for early 6.5 and later ones. I don't have the numbers to check with but I would check it out.

HowieE,

i'm pretty sure i have the right pump. my suburban was doing the same thing before i changed the water pump. I figured the leaking water pump caused the coolant level to drop and let air in the system...but its doing the same thing with the new pump. Another thing i forgot to mention, when i get heat up front, the rear heater wasn't making heat. can a rear heater cause this?

Sounds like a clog to me. Something is stopping the coolent from moving. Try Flushing the system. Watch out for the heater core as this is weak and doesn't do well under a lot of pressure. Dex cool is allful once it goes more than a few years in the truck. Starts to goo up.

Forgot to say that even new thermostats don't always work right. Might want to check it out.

Good Luck.Edited by: Diesel Grinch
