It's at the shop now getting JK OPS/ lift pump, The did the injectors and gp's I am a CAT Diesel person and dont know much about GM's way of doing things... It still gets 17 mpg and sounds good after it is running

Any ides?

Thanks

Are your glows getting power during the wait to start? Sounds glow-y so far. Radiator hose isn't getting firm on cold start is it?

Hi
The glow plugs are getting power during the wait to start then they go on like 2 or three more times after it's running I did the test light deal and they all made it go on.. I dont know about Radiator hose, and as luck would have it the truck is locked up in the shop. I changed the pump and the t stat back in april it had 120k on it and thought it would be a good idea. I was kinda thinkin last night it is a bad ring (hope not)

hey knkreb,

I should try the Quick Heat Glow Plugs from JK, the ones in there now are the standard gm ones for that year.. If not any other thoughts? I was also wonderin if the turbo is going bad can it blow oil in to the intake and have it miss fire?

Measure the ohms on the plugs to see if they're good. .8-1.4 is accceptable.

The turbo misfire thing is low fuel pressure on the IP. Check fuel out of the filter bleed at idle.

Hey Quantum,

Ok I will give that a shot see what I get, Is there any thing els that could make it miss like that? like I sed I am A Cat man and not to up on how GM did things.. I was also wonderin will the ecm pop a code if a injector is not firein right??

Thanks

I had the same problem as you.Lots of smoke at start-up.Just started out of the blue as yours did.It ended up being a bent conecting rod(piston sat .30" of inch below deck)This was caused by anti-freeze leaking into cyl.causing hydro-lock.I am not saying that is your problem but diesels that are low on compression will smoke alot when cold.Once they warm-up and there is heat in the cylinder(s) that is enough to stop the smoking.I had a #5cyl.imbalance code on the computer and when I took the engine apart, sure enough #5 rod was bent.If you have a cylinder imbalance code,Do a compression test on that cylinder.

I am not poping any codes though.. also not haveing any anti-freeze leaks (I put a mark on the tank when it's cold) and I did what Quantum sed all around .3 ish, think a stuck injector?. doing a comp test when I get some time to take the turbo off and work like a gentlemen.. any other Ideas? oo and the rad hoes is not gettin hard at startup.. it will do it for like .05 of a min so it's not like i could start cracking injector lines.

Oil in intake normal. It comes from the CDR usually, (diesel version of PCV valve). It can also come from failing turbo seals too, but again, usually it's just the CDR.

If all glows good, then you should be good. I have JK's in mine right now, work really nice. I don't know if you would really be "buying" much more by changing out to a new set if all of yours are operative at the moment.

Hey Knkreb,

I know what you meen the .05 min of smoke and miss is not a big prob for me BUT I am looking 3 months down the road when it's like -3 when I get in my truck and she a no go.... for peace of minde I would like to know that is making it do it... 129,000 is kinda young for it to this I would think..

But I guess when I do a Comp test I will know if it's going to be time order a AMG long block... (ouch)

Thanks Johnny

We are operating under similar weather conditions. Last year, my glow plug controller melted down. It was about 20°F. It started with the help of a hair dryer in the intake. Even with 1 dead glow, she should still light off in cold weather. The Canadian guys have it worse than us....

Thats true,

I talked to bill (health diesel)
He seems to think the timing could be off, sed to have it set at - 1.94
Also thought it could be the IP it self going bad.. I have to get my hands on a tech2 though..

Also thought it would be a good move to test the GP wires see if there is a short or somethin..

I am thinkin Sunday I will dig into her (just what I wana do on the day off)
any one in NJ lookin to kill a day???

Have heard of blocking off the tailpipe to get it started in the cold? That is what we did to our hummers in the Army when the glow plugs failed to warm up. It worked most of the time. ;)

Way too much difference between clyinders. You've got something internal gone wrong looks like. All should be closer to 400 psi. 310 way too low.

well i did cyl 3 again 310 first time 339 2nd time all the others are in the 350-410

though the high output glows did make it start faster less smoke
I was also told to set the timmin to -1.94

yea I know.. but what gets me is it runs fine after the first .05min think I should do a pull and dig into her or just leave it alone till it gets to the point it will not start?

also if I am going to spend 6k on a new long block I will have someone put it in this way I get a 2 year parts and labor deal..
