: Duramax in a car???
Superduty421 09-02-2005, 07:23 PM I need to know what the physical dimensions are of the Duramax Diesel. I am looking into putting one into a 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 Aerocoupe with a 4L80E and 2.73 geared 12-bolt.
I know it sounds silly, but I may have access to one for pretty cheap and I already have the 4L80 for the car. I was planning on putting a twin turbo Pontiac 400 in it, but would like to try this.
I need to know how
Long (including accesories),
Wide (including exhaust),
Tall (Pan to top of intake),
and heavy (listed weight) it is.
If it is too much over 800 lbs, or physically larger than a BBC by too much, I'll probably pass, but it was just an idea.
I imagine that a Duramax with a 4L80E and a 2.73 geared rear in a vehicle under 4,000lbs could easily run 12s, maybe 11s and retrun ~30mpg.
SmoothAT 09-02-2005, 09:06 PM with 300/310 Hp you will do about 14/15 in the 1/4 mile. And unless that tranny is heavily modded, you will snap it in half with all that tq. But it is a great idea. If you could get ahold of a corvette, now your talking! The CI of a duramax is 403 so it should fit in a vette, and chop up the tunnel to fit a Allison tranny, you just might have a super car.
Superduty421 09-02-2005, 10:01 PM The 4L80E is a Hughes unit rated for 1,000hp/1,000ft.lbs of torque. When I say 12s or 11s, I mean with some of the upgrades available to it.
TheBac 09-02-2005, 10:42 PM Sounds like a decent project. I would think the Dmax is about the same weight as a big Olds. You can put '80-'84 Cutlass sedan diesel springs in that GranPrix if you needed to...
Have you thought about the wire harness and electronics? That may be a problem for you...
Savvy up 09-02-2005, 10:51 PM Wow now this sounds cool. If and when you get started on this project be sure to post lots of pics:) . Yeah I would like to see someone do that, the D-max in a car… Oh Yeah.
My hats of to you. Good luck
SnowDrift 09-02-2005, 11:06 PM My '81 Grand Prix, which is the same body style you're looking at working on had a 350 Olds. diesel in it from the factory. Heavy springs in it may be comparable to what you might need.

ktmrfs 09-02-2005, 11:41 PM you might check the weight. IIRC the durmax/allison adds about 800lbs over what the 6l gasser/4LE80 weighs. It's no lightweight motor. (well, maybe for a diesel it is lightweight)
Cummin_Stroke_this_Dmax 09-02-2005, 11:51 PM Along time ago I saw where somebody on here was wanting to put a Dmax/alli in a 69 Camaro, does anyone know how that project is coming?
Superduty421 09-03-2005, 12:04 AM The springs are already 50% stiffer than the stiffest springs the factory put in. 600lbs per inch vs. 420lbs per inch.
If it is true that a D-Max/Allison weighs 800lbs more than a 6L/4L80 then I might be in a little over my head. I want this car to handle as well as accelerate. As far as the harness and stuff goes, that would be up to Arizona Speed and Marine to mess with.
How much of that extra weight is the Allison over the 4L80???
if you convert the trunk into a giant fuel tank, your weight balance issues will all be solved completely....:)

OK the low down on weight is the D/A option adds 642.6# over 6l/auto.
Also the 8.1/A adds 479.1# so the weight is in the alli.
Your looking at 163.5# heavier w/ a dmax over 8.1 BBC.
TheBac 09-03-2005, 01:54 PM But he wasnt going to use the Allison.
Dmax Tim 09-03-2005, 02:06 PM But he wasnt going to use the Allison.
The only way the options/weights are shown is in the complete upgrade.
So the difference between the 8.1/alli and D/alli is 163#.
BTW this is full option, so it includes an extra battery.
I'd venture to say that with 500 or so rear wheel torque that GP would do 12's easily. My lowly buick with 450 rear wheel torque and maybe 320 horses pushes 3700 plus pounds to the tune of 12.10's at 113mph.

Superduty421 09-05-2005, 01:13 PM With an engine weight of 163lbs more than a BBC, I think I am going to pass. That puts it at well over 900lbs. The twin turbo Pontiac 400 I plan on building won't push more than 750lbs with everything attached.
keith_2500hd 09-08-2005, 08:54 PM have you considered a 6.5 don't think it is much over what you are looking at. have seen 1 in corvette(pictures here), the torque and low gearing would fly, and could run diesel, bio or what ever(blends of VO,WVO,SVO, used engine oils/fluids) if use mechanical(military hardened components) fuel pump
TA Dave 09-18-2005, 09:53 PM 400 block with a new BOP 3 in main, 4 in stroke forged crank. I'd go with a single turbo, efi and the 4L80. With a very mild tune you could run 11's all day long.
Just looking under the hood of my 06, I would think the biggest problem would be the height of the Dmax.
bigsh 09-19-2005, 06:30 PM not to hijack this, but how feasable is it to get a dmax or dmax/ali into my truck (see sig)?
Superduty421 09-19-2005, 07:35 PM Where are you seeing a new forged, 3" main, 4" stroke crank for Pontiacs. I just went to www.bopengineering.com (http://www.bopengineering.com) and did not see it anywhere?
Jake
Burnin Mad Max 11-01-2005, 02:27 PM Man I wanna see this thing when its finished. Take pictures during the build too.
