should be a 4.3 vortec

First things first, I would start out with doing a basic tune-up to the engine. Spark plugs & wires, cap & rotor, coolant flush, oil change, air filter change & fuel filter. That should help out a big w/ mpg and maybe restore some lost power.

Remember going from a D-MAX to a 4.3 is quite a difference, a difference of about 150 horsepower and 350 ft/lb of torque.

12 mpg? empty?
Something is definetely wrong there....
Cat. converter plugged, perhaps?
The 4.3 is not a powerhouse, per se, especially in a full sized truck, however they aren't a bad motor...As was stated earlier, do the basic tuneup on it....you might want to see if you can find someone with a tech-2 to check the engine data on it (sensors and such) could be something very simple causing a lack of milage.

Also consider the O2 sensors. They can have a negative affect on mileage if they are "tired".
Are you running on oversized tires? Have you checked the tire pressure?
When was the last time you had the transmission fluid/filter changed?

tune up alredy done

o2 sensors cant remember 2 new ones i think? cant remember how many i put on this vehicle

converter....ummmmm....well it was making noise but not now....

"check engine data" nothing significant found.

theis isnt any thing obvious wrong with it and nothing major
ti just sucks!
it has no power either you slam it all the way to the floor and slowly gain speed

there programmers are doing well with uping milage and power any chance they have something for one that old?

Something odd seems to be going on. The wife is a lead foot, and has the tickets to prove it. She gets a consistant 18 mpg, and plenty of power. Most of the time she has close to a thousand pounds loaded in the back. Only thing I can think of, is that we put synthetic oil in the front and real differentials. That shouldn't be the problem.

Have you cleaned the injectors?
