Can oil and fuel blow by actually cause a diesel to run out of control.

Oil in the intake can cause a run away situation, seen a turbo leak cause it once.

LOL. I had a run away today and could not figure out why. I was only able to kill her after stuffing a set of coveralls into the intake. I couldn't figure out what happened since i have not touched the injection pump and the throttle linkage seemed fine. The engine is on its last leg and has tons of blow by. You can literally watch it spit oil out of the blow by tube under load.

I think the engine might be done this time. It was running wide open for about 45 seconds and started blowing white smoke pretty bad before i could get her shut down.

Oil will def. cause a run away engine. The submarine I was on had an old 1938 design from Fairbanks Morse. was a 8 cylinder 8 1/8" bore with opposed pistons... so 16 in total with two huge crankshafts, a crazy vertical drive assembly to keep everything in sync... and a crazy 5300 scfm super charger. ALOT of rotating mass in such a small space... this thing took off on us... shut down rpm was 868 +/- 50 rpm... after discharging 6 Co2 fire extinguishers in the intake, it finally stopped.... was hitting close to 1,000 rpm. Nothing flew apart but it's amazing what a small oil leak can do.

this is why new stuff as steel shut down plates to cut off air flow(industrial/military equipment)

There was one older road tractor that had some kinda seal problem I used to hear the truckers talk about. Dont remember what engine but it would blow some oil seal and it would just run away until it ran out of oil and locked up. No way to shut it down going up the road. That sounds like a real bad day.

I bet there were soiled drawers and sweating bullets when it finally stopped. That sounds scary as hell.

older rabbits had that problem. oil would get hot and start sucking into the turbo and run away

I was lucky this was just a little mule side by side but yes it was a interesting experience. The mule still runs just fine and even started up easy but i would say its days are numbered.

Still running some how. Lots of oil from blow by and it looks like the turbo seals are leaking. Oil coming out the exhaust big time. I was able to move three up armor toyota landcruisers with it today which tip the scales at over 7000lbs. I pulled one at about 15 mph for about 1/4 mile so all i can say is that i am impressed with the durability of the little mule. I mean she has been beat to hell abandoned, rescued, beat to hell again, and then boosted and is still some how trucking along.

Did i mention she has out pulled a 500cc polaris 6x6 and a 4x6 gator ;)

No camera in country for me. But i will see if i can borrow one from the guys to get a few pics. We gave her a tan paint job and some air borne wings. Also a turbo off of a land cruiser which does very little but sounds and looks like of cool. We get a lot of funny looks from new guys driving it around the motor pool.

Re ran the oil dump tube. Still seams to be getting a lot of blow by and a little oil in the exhaust but is still running strong. Fixed a few exhaust leaks and now the turbo is spooling a lot faster. I think the dump tube might have been bent too much and not allowing oil to drain. Seems to be running decent.

I had an old POS rabbit diesel that had lots of blowby. The oil would pool in the intake until it was deep enough to start to flood into the motor.
You would be going down the highway and all of a sudden it would take off. I would just lift my foot off the accelerator and hang on.
It would accelerator pretty good and leave a solid blue trail of smoke. After maybe a 2000' or so...it would run out of oil in the intake and everything was back to normal.
I thought it was fun. The motor did not have enough power to really get you in trouble. You knew it was going to happen somewhat regularly so it was not a big deal.

LOL. Yeah it was the same deal and it worked ok for what we used it for.

Engines don't run away mechanics do. Engines overspeed. :)

I lost most of my hearing in my right ear when old 3-71 generator engine took off. This was on an old N.Y. Harbor Tug Boat. We were in the shipyard and they were spray painting when on of the yard workers hit the start button. Let me tell you once it happens to you you do not forget the sound. I almost made it to the trip for the flapper on the blower when it locked up and went BANG!

:hehe::hehe: That there is funny!! And true, I've run from more than one vehicle in my day.

I have yet to overspeed, but runaway I've done many times!!!
