I went to a salvage yard and got the lower half of a 6.0 airbox. Before I take a saw to this thing, does anyone have any advice as to where and what size the cutouts should be? Any other advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Any pictures would be a plus as well.
Thanks,
Mark

I have the same box that I modified for cold air with a four inch duct out the bottom as others here have done. If I were to do it over, I'd place the hole for the duct as far to the right side of the inside of the box as possible (when looking down at the box from the top). I centered mine and had to cut more metal than necessary from the stock mounting plate that sits directly below the air box in the truck. If you take the lower from the air box and look at the metal plate it is mounted on at your truck, you'll see what I mean. Also, I used a cordless sawsall and a roto zip to do the surgery on mine. It was a mutha and would be easier I think using a four inch hole saw.

I do not like the swiss cheese approach. It seems to let in to much under hood heat. I prefer the modifications in the bottom of the box. Vararam has come up with a bottom replacement that is all open. Do a search here for that info if you want. I am going to test it next week.

I've searched the forum for the Vararam info., and it looks interesting. I'll do some poking around under the hood Saturday and see if I can configure some manner of unobtrusive ducting to draw outside air into the bottom without risking a water intake issue which could lead to hydro-lock. The salvage air-box bottom only cost me $20 bucks, so I'll see what works best. The ram-air system I installed on my Z/28 drew air from under the bumper, with the ducting running across the face of the radiator. But cooling wasn't an issue... The air-box was dead center under the hood. That system necessitated the bottom of the air-box being cut away as well. Even during a torential rain, it never ingested any water. The ducting was rectangular, resembling a cold air return. Ram-air isn't what I'm looking for, just cooler air...
