Picked up my 06 duramax last night, it has 34 miles on it. To break it in, when should the first oil change be, rear end change etc. Thanks.

If you want to be anal change the oil once at 500 miles and again at 3000 miles. i would definitely change the oil by 1500 miles. i did mine at about 900 or so.and again at 4500 and switched to amsoil synthetic. everybody will have a different opinion on this.

rear end.up to you really.i would recommend between 3000-5000 miles. i waited 15000 to do mine. that was too long. go ahead and do the front diff too while your at it.

Welcome aboard klutchdust....
Some change the oil out at 500, some at 1000....then again, some don't change it until the light comes on (which I think is nuts with a new engine, but what do I know)
Do what makes you feel comfortable
As far as the differentials go....
The old user's handbook says at 500 miles....and as fuzzy as my gear oil was at that milage, that's what I would recommend as well....

Welcome!

As these guys said there are many opinions on the fluid change schedules - so I'll throw mine in too.

I change my engine oil at 500, 3500 and 6500 with dino oil and switch to amsoil synthetic at 10000 going to extended drain intervals.

For the rear end, I changed mine after my initial 500 miles towing (12K). Also changed the allison spin on at 1500 and was suprised at the amount of metalic sludge on the magnet.

Enjoy the wealth of knowledge around here and if you hang around alot, get ready to spend some money - if you truck is stock now - it probably won't be for long!;)

All synthetic as soon as possible like 500 miles, front, rear, and engine.

I run Rotella synthetic in the motor and love it. Cheap at Wally World. I do it mostly for extended change intervals. We drive about 12,000 miles a month on 3 trucks. Changing the oil every 3000 miles would really suck. I change at 10,000 miles.

I won't reccomend any particular brand as a war will break out. Heck a war is still going to break out over synthetic vs dino oil.

read some info hear on synthetics vs dino oil.

I changed mine at 1000, again at 3500, next will be 6500 then every 3000 to 4000 miles after that. I am currently using Mobil Delvac 1300 Super conventional oil with the AC/Delco filter. There is a lot of talk about synthetics, I'm not completely sold yet but I am keeping an open mind. I just can't break the "3000 mile oil change habit" yet. The Rotella T synthetic is available at Wally's as well as the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV which, according to a Exxon Mobil distributor is the same as Mobil Delvac 1. The Mobil 1 Truck and Suv can be had at WallyWorld for $20 per 5qt jug. A lot of folks like the Mobil 1 oil filter.

Where do you buy the Mobil 1 oil filter??? Advanced Auto Parts? AutoZone?? Anyone???

auto zone carrys the mobil 1 oil filters around here so i would think they have them every where.

Not to sound stupid but why change the rear end oil at such low miles i've never changed oil in any of my rears(5) with only one failure(9.5 semifloat with 90k) i've got 7k on my new one should i change now? what about zf oil?
