: Why upsize tires?

I need new tires. I would love to get some wider wheels, bigger tires and get them flush looking with the fenders. But I can't afford that. So I will end up just replacing my tires. I keep toying with the idea of getting 265's instead of 245's. I can get a real good deal on some Dunlop Radial Rover ATs 245/75/16. Is there an advantage besides asthetics to a little wider tire?;)

Basically for looks....I went from 245 to 285's and will probably end up at 265's....Not that that helps...

Mostly for looks, but it did make my truck ride a little better since I have more sidewall now. Also, I had to change tires because the stockers weren't good on snow and ice. The first time I hit the brake (lightly) it sent the truck into a 360 spin. I have already rolled a truck and didn't want to lose this one too. IMO 285s were night and day difference in the snow and ice. More friction on the road. I lost maybe 1 mpg by moving up in size.

If you get E-Rated road tires, stepping up to 265 will save you some fuel because it will drop your freeway RPM some. Especially helpful if you drive 75mph alot.

more clearance for the under carriage, unless its a street queen

softer ride in my case, with 315s but that is too large for really heavy towing.

if they were cheaper than my 315s, i would run a 285 as it is probably the best overall size......

All of the above plus a larger tire contact patch area= better traction.

More rear axle load capacity or safety factor, (6830 lbs vs 6084 lbs), assuming you mount them on a rim 7-8" wide, and one rated for at least 3415 lbs.

I was at the tire shop on Monday. I told the guy I wanted 285/75/16 height but not so wide. He told me to get 255/85/16. Do they make such a thing? I like the height but not sooooo wide!!!!!!

I didn't see any in E though, so you may want to check other sites ect....

I've heard of others here, (some time ago), running a Dunlop Radial Rover 255/85/16, on our stock PYO's are wide enough to mount them.
But if load capacity is an issue, these appear to be Load Range "D", which probably is a lower weight rating, and less plys.
Search net for more tire specs.

I went ahead and told my pal to order those 245/75/16 Dunlops. The ones I got are E rating 10 plys. I read a couple of reviews (after I ordered of course) that these tires wear somewhat fast. Well s**t! hehe It is not like the stock bridgestones didn't wear on me fast. I have 35K miles and could probably have used new tires at 25K. We shall see...
