How do you know if you have the LBZ. Is it on all the 06 Duramax's?

the first 06's are LLY..the LBZ was to be released 4th quarter, but there are some out there.

as far as telling what you have..I'm going to take a guess here, but check the 8th digit in the VIN number...
1= LB7
2= LLY
3= LBZ (this is a guess)

There is also a sticker in the glove box that lists all of your options. You will find either LLY or LBZ there.

I don't know, but I think the preliminary '06's are different than current LLY's.

Don't they use the new computer?

Why do the manufacturers split the model year options like that. If I was aware I would have waited a few months

not to be a troll, but if I was in your shoes I would done a little more research before spending 40-50k on the truck.....-:t

If the auto business were like is was 10 years ago, this would probably have happened in the case of the '06 split on the LLY and LBZ. But the market place is so competitive, the manufacturers are introducing product changes, some visible to the customer and some not, on a continual basis during the production year to either maintain or gain a competitive edge or sales advantage.

I wouldn't sweat it. Until someone shows me reason not to, I am calling the 06 a lbz (lowercase as in Junior) which will grow up to be a LBZ mid model year. Grouping it with the LLY is not correct as the LLY mods will not work. Visually, it has been changed, and only time will tell if emissions or foundation (block/rod upgrades etc) are the holdback on the power rating.

I agree with Kennedy, it may not be called an LBZ officially, but I bet it actually IS an LBZ that is not tuned as high. They wouldnt do all the improvements to it, deeper skirt, changed heads, improved cooling, different Air intake and filter, higher pressure injectors, and new ECM jsut for a two month run.

Once the official LBZ;s come out, I bet they LOOK the same as the current 06' engine, just has the power turned up on the computer.

my .02, I may be wrong but I drove an 06' and it looked under its hood for about 15 minutes( while my wife was saying, what are you DOING!). It is NOT an LLY.

I saw a 06 dmax w/ red line of 4800 rpm. 8th digit in vin was a 2,but the intake was different from 05, the air box showed 310 horse. so not sure if i've seen a lbz yet?

"redline" on the 04-05 is also 4800. Difference is that for 06 GM got rid of the "dashed" readline between 3200 and 4800. I'll bet that on acceleration you still shift at 3200 and have a cutout just above that. It will still go to 4800 with grade braking.

Trout 74 , I agree that the engine is not the old LLY. Its quiet and looks completely different. The one I ordered in May is at the dealers lot for 1 month. I want to reorder the LBZ. WHO KNOWS??

The LBZ motor will not be out until late 06. This from what I have read. I could be wrong. Just a guess...

An early '06 is an LLY. WHY? Because it is the basic LLY engine with a new turbo & cooling system, different controller (As far as the engine goes). The later lbz is not just the better version of a "junior lbz" because the real lbz (which doesn't have a 2 in the vin) will have a refined engine over an early (lly) '06. That includes all new stronger internals in the engine to handle the extra power better and provide better longetivity as well as better emissions for the power output to comply with standards. An '06 lly is a lot more like an 04.5-05 duramax (so lly) than it is like an LBZ.

An LBZ has 360hp. Every '06 (so in your case an lly) has a different intake. They moved up the redline because a lot of people expressed worries when their tacho needle would go way into the red when engine braking. It is only running on compression and therefore is not harmed by that at all. So they put up the redline in '06 to avoid confusion.

Hope it helps.

Just drove home with a 06 GMC 2500HD Crewcab SLT 4X4 D MAX with 6 Spd Allison Friday. Just to let everyone know the 8th digit on my VIN is a 2 and its marked 310 hp.
Salesman told me I can order one with the LBZ in Oct. but cant tell when it would be in.

You can call it whatever you choose to, but fact is, if it gets lumped into the LLY category it will confuse people. Typical LLY mods will not work on an early 06. LBZ mods surely will. The 06 "LLY" operating system, controls, etc are LBZ in design, and power output has been increased significantly, but not completely. It has ALL of the visible upgrades in place. The holdback may be the block/rod/compression upgrade, OR purely emissions...

I suppose you can look at it that way if you like. I was just stating the facts and not my personal opinion. If I had to name them I would have just introduced the lbz for all '06 models.

There, by the way might be direct port software available in the future that is both compatible with the old and new llys.

Won't all of this make it really tough for the early 06's to be modded? I mean if they are not quite an LBZ and yet not really an LLY then what chip makers and other aftermarket goodie makers are going to come out with a version just for this "tweener" version of the D-max?

Never know what will come out. There are tuners that do both LB7 and LLY, so adding the 06 stuff shouldn't be a problem, but as far as groups go, we'll see LB7, 04.5-05LLY, and 06LLY/LBZ in 3 distinctive groups for the most part.

Until we see them both under the microscope we are still speculating.

Anyone remember the "upgrade notice" for the LLY that said fuel injection pressures increased to 26,000 psi? Same claim made this year...

Yep. I took one for a ride, and WOT it still shifts at 3200ish.

Thanks for all the input. LBZ or not I love my 06. I didn't do any research on it because I had a GMC prior And loved it too. I just knew I wanted another GMC. I was origanally looking for a 4 door gasser. Saw this on the lot and a few more visits to the dealer and the right deal and it was mine!
