Hello all,

This is my first post to this Forum.

I put a 6.2 diesel into my 79' 4x4 Chevy. Originally, a TH 400 tranny was going in, but came across an Allison 5 speed tranny out of a 5 ton military truck that was overhauled.

In order to install the Allison, the transfer case would be "divorced" so I'm aware of those mods.

Because this is a 'Bigger" transmission" and might require body modifications to fit(don't know yet) would this whole swap be pratical over the TH 400?

Okay you may not want to do that. this is what I went through on an old 6.9 Ford.

We installed the allison, every time the tranny shifted, it shifted so hard and fast it would chirp the tires. all the way up through 6th gear.

We swapped to a duallie rear end, no help.

19.5" tires were not popular at the time, so we used 22.5 lo-pro truck tires. Not sying this would happen to you, but be sure you can detune the shifts before you do it.

The image didn't come up, click on it to see, an interesting looking truck with 22.5 truck rubber.Edited by: Traveler

Thanks for the reply.

I thought of exactly that...how hard the Allison would shift. Also, how to adapt a transfer case which would be more complex process then desired.

So, I'm sticking with the TH 400.

Thanks again!
