Very cool, I love 1st Gen 4Runners. I had a '86 for a long time. It looks like yours is still IFS right? Do a SAS swap, dual cases, lockers, and be prepared to go anywhere you are brave enough to try! The 22RE will run for damn ever too... you just won't be going anywhere in a hurry. :D

yeah id love to swap the front end. its got 36s now and needs new gears i crawl everywhere. i went to our local lake, which isnt impressive, but i drove over everything in 4lo. i hate the front pipe on the exhaust with that stupid y. im about to buy a second replacement. cant believe how easy they are to crack. i did find a "long tube" style though gonna try that. im leaving for korea soon and selling my dmax hopefully but cant decide if i want to sell this or not. goin to florida after korea so im sure there will be more mud there than here in texas.

I'm not sure the 'yota will be too much fun in the Florida mud. It's all about huge tires and huge HP in that stuff! The 'yotas love more technical trails (I used to run mine at Hollister Hills in CA, where they do the annual Top Truck Challenge).

it'll take the mud pretty good. the tires are bald and i still have to drive into the lake just to get it stuck. but i know what you mean with the high hp. i was looking into either the turbo gas motor or the turbo diesel just for a lil more pep.

The light weight and big, bald tires probably help it float on top of the mud mostly. When it starts to dig in though you'll find the 22RE can't spin big tires at the speeds necessary for really gnarly mud.

I looked into the turbo swap for my 'runner. From what I gathered back then it's not a ground-up turbo motor, so it's still pretty weak and you can't turn up the boost much. The head is different, but only for oil-supply passages, otherwise it's just the exhaust mani, turbo setup/plumbing that's different. A diesel would be sweet though! Lots and lots of motors have been swapped into 'runners so there are plenty of options out there.

Yeah, 4Runners are HiLux Surfs in most non-US markets. I drive tons of 'em, almost always diesel, here in Afghanistan. Whatever the 4cyl turbo diesel in the mid/late-90s Surfs (3rd gen) was would be a great swap. It's peppy in those rigs, and the 1st gens are even lighter.
