JEBar 08-30-2005, 12:42 PM GM Recalls Pickups, SUVs In Northern States
Corrosion Can Cause Antilock Brake Problems
POSTED: 12:12 pm EDT August 30, 2005
WASHINGTON -- General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it was recalling about 800,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks in 14 northern states because corrosion was affecting the antilock brake system, leading to more than 200 low-speed crashes.
GM, the world's largest automaker, said the recall involved the 1999-2002 model years of the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation in late April of more than 1.2 million GM pickups and SUVs in 20 states because of questions over the antilock brakes.
The investigation is pending.
GM spokesman Alan Adler said salt corrosion and road grime can wedge its way into a plastic piece that covers the ABS sensor near the wheel hub.
The corrosion leads the sensors to activate the ABS system at speeds of about 4 miles per hour to about 11 mph, requiring a longer stopping distance. The ABS system is generally started at speeds of 15 to 20 mph, Adler said.
GM said there have been 228 crashes reported through the end of May, including 10 minor injuries.
The recall involves less than 20 percent of the vehicles built during the four model years. The states include: Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.

BullydogPowered 09-01-2005, 12:18 PM Anybody know who i should call, i bought my truck in VA but it was originally titled in NY? I have a feeling i wont get a notice.
RUNNINHORN 09-02-2005, 01:40 PM my ABS light keeps coming on randomly and when it does, the brake pedal has a funky pulse, do you think this recall could fix that, or would they say my H2 tires/wheels are the cause and deny it?
TClark 09-04-2005, 09:51 PM runninhorn, i had that exact same problem with mine, didnt really effect the driveability of the truck, it did it for almost a year, they finally fixed it after several attempts. I dont remember exactly what they did, but i'll pull my paperwork and see what it says was the fix for it. I have an 03 2500HD dura/ally 2wd, crew. Lemme look tomorrow and i'll post back up.

Coaster Chaser 09-15-2005, 07:32 PM If it is like the C4500 they will more likly replace the brake lite switch. On my 4500 it wiuld set off the service brake soon lite on reach up and push the plug in all the way to see if that stops it .
pofarmboy 11-04-2005, 09:26 PM that should fix the problem. my 2001 hd i had was doing the same thing was waiting for the recall but ended up trading it before the recall came out good luck.
jalanrr 11-04-2005, 11:26 PM They most likely removed the sensor and cleaned the mounting surfaces to restore the proper air gap.
CrazyDaze 12-18-2005, 11:03 AM I've been having this issue on my '03 for 2 years and still can't get the dealer to fix it. I've gotten so used to the condition now that when I drive my wifes Yukon I practically lock the brakes under 5 MPH because I'm so used to putting my foot to the floor.
Too bad this doesn't cover the '03's.
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 12-20-2005, 09:40 PM The states include: Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia.

Here is some info
GM Expands Recall To Six More States, D.C.
POSTED: 3:04 pm CST December 23, 2005
DETROIT -- Six states and the District of Columbia have been added to a General Motors recall.
GM recalling vehicles over concerns about the brakes on the 1999-2002 model years of the Chevy Avalanche, Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban, and the GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL.
Now part of the 500,000 vehicle recall are Delaware, Iowa, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
The problem is that road grime can wedge its ways into a plastic piece that covers the anti-lock brake sensor. The result is salt corrosion, which leads to unwanted activation of the antilock brakes at low speeds. The cars then need a longer stopping distance.
GM is now recalling vehicles in a total of 20 states.
Now before you go running to the dealer, It will take a couple weeks for the dealers to get the notification and for GM to send the notification to the owners of the affected vehicles.
Antnee77 12-26-2005, 10:58 AM My 03 has this same problem, but it's not covered under the recall, only 99-02. What should I do?
Diesel_Day_Dreamin 12-31-2005, 06:07 PM Actually Maryland was not in the Union, it was a southern state (right under the Mason/Dixon line) but I'm not here to split hairs.
Actually, President Lincoln imprisoned <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Maryland lawmakers to keep them from voting to join the Confederacy. It was a neutral state by force.

Just like he imprisoned thousands of others that disagreed with him. He didnt let that little "habeas corpus" thing get in his way.
