: Hard to start

It all started last saturday, I went out to start the truck and it would turn over but would not crank. I did not plug it in Fri. night, I thought maybe it was just cold( 18 degrees) so I plugged it in for an hour. Tried to start it again, cranked several times and finally started. I decided to change fuel filters to be safe, they had been changed a few months before this. I only changed the factory filter, I did not have a cat. For three days it would take 15-20 seconds of cranking to start. After it started it ran fine. After estimating a job, I came out and truck would not start. I bled the filter and tried to drain it in case it had water. Still would not start. I had gotten to the Cat dealer and had 3 filters with me. I changed th cat on the frame and primed the factory filter I got air bubbles then nothing would come out. Cold and irritated, I called dealer for tow. He said it could be fuel pump.

The next day he calls and said they primed filter and replaced a clamp and that it started fine in heated shop, he said it could be water in fuel freezing. I had the cat filter in back of truck in a bucket that I caucht fuel in. I watched the mechanic open filter and only a couple drops of water were present. Said he would check glow plugs.

Dealer called and said it was ready, it took 3 attempts at 20-30 seconds to start. Went inside and told service guy , the other sw and mechanic were off today. Even warmed up it takes 2-3 tries at 20-30 seconds of cranking to start.

I use Total power every fill up. I don`t really know if they checked the fuel pump. Should I have them drain the tank anyway, It has never done this before

Sorry for the novel, wayne

ARE YOU JUST JUMPING IN THE TRUCK TURNING THE KEY OR DO YOU WAITE FOR THE GLOW PLUGS?

No, I always wait for glow plug light to go out, with juice unplugged it starts the same. Dealer did not seem to have a problem with the Cat filter on the frame.

Mine was hard to start yesterday.

Could it be just hard to start and nothing else?

IMHO I would just change filters, plug in, and run it.

Most times its something simple.

Well, it has never done this before, no problems last winter. It just seems wierd that the first time in a month that I did not plug it in, is when it took longer than normal to start.

I cranked it this morning and it started easier, but not like it usually cranks. I dumped a whole bottle of total power in it and I am letting it idle for a while. I also put the grille cover on, first time it`s been used.

Was this just after a fuel fill ? It could be that you got a bad batch, or a "warm climate" batch. Woodbine md ? did you fill up somewhere south of there and come back north ?
Just thoughts...

I did fill up on the way home, always try to get fuel near home, it`s cheaper. 90% of the time it is the same station. The farthest south I have been is Kensington,md.

I had a very similar thing happen to me. Filled up at high volume place I was using all the time and on the 30 mile trip home @ about 0 degees I gelled while doing 40 mphhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

Had to be towed and pay $150 for dealer to thaw and treat with fuel treatment. The thing that really pissed me off was that I use a treatment every tank! I never let it get low and use a high volume fuel stop. The moral of the story "feces happens"

BAd load of fuel, treat heavily with total power and run, then change filter.(s)

That may not be the problem but it's the best place to start. Keep us posted.

My truck got towed to the dealer again last week. I went in home depot and when I came out, it wouldn`t start.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif I called the dealer today and the service writer said it was ready. When I asked what the problem was, he said they replaced 4 injectors on the left side.

I asked for details about the injectors, but he wasn`t sure exactly what the diesel tech did. I will have plenty of questions tomorrow when I pick it up. I had no idea the injectors would cause it to not start.

I have had problems with no start and an Aftermarket radio and Edge were the cause. The Digistar module was not properly set up and the truck would go into theft mode and crank, but not start.

Once the Onstar was set up and the digistar module reinstalled, and the Edge reinstalled, everything worked.
