: LB7: whats a stock trans going to take
tomz28 07-04-2011, 10:42 AM So how much can a stock trans take at the truck pulls?
i know its not like the drag strip. your just spinning tires most of the way and you never go past 3rd gear and your in 4low which is just helping things that much more.
im running 225 tune now and i want to go higher(350 tune?). i got a few farmers running there mouths with there F250s. i did beat them all last year (took first).
front end in my truck is built, im going to clamp the leaf springs this year and i turned the front end all the way down
so how important is the built trans for this
thanks guys for the input
TrailerproPop 07-04-2011, 12:19 PM It's just a matter of time. :shitfan:
FYI, Your truck will pull better with a built tranny. ):h
carter_44 07-04-2011, 02:53 PM It could go out on your tomorrow or last another 5 years. No one knows. Build your trans then make the power.
towboattrash34 07-04-2011, 02:55 PM my 08 lmm with 77,500 miles the tq converter went out just towing my 5th wheel and tow tune... never limped the trans, but having it rebuilt before it does....

A stock tranny will hold up a long time sled pulled with a hot tuned truck that is more or less stock. My truck is one of a very few in the area with a built tranny. At the pulls, the stock tranny guys are usually right there with me and occasionally one will beat me. Not shifting past 3rd and running in low range will let the tranny live a long time if you turn the juice back down for street use.
Although once you have a truck with a built tranny you will wonder how you ever survived without one.
nmband13 07-05-2011, 06:32 PM My stock trans with 164k on her lasted a season of 20 hooks, ran an estimated 360wrhp tune all the time, and 400rwhp tune for 16 hooks then 450rwhp for the last 4 hooks, the last hook of the season I took out all the defuel, bad idea. She slipped so bad I couldn't give her more than 20% throttle without slipping, even on stock power.

That is good insurance for what you are doing with the truck. You will thank yourself later on time and time again.
nmband13 07-06-2011, 06:14 PM What brand torque convertor?
tomz28 07-06-2011, 10:32 PM its the one that comes with the kits, PI Mke L converter
jon c 07-07-2011, 09:56 AM there is a guy around here who runs the circuit in the pro street diesel class, who i think was running about 450- 500 horse with a stock trans up untill this year. he had it built in the spring but pulled at least 3 seasons that i know of with his stock trans. he claims pulling 4 low 3rd gear you will not hurt the stock trans truck pulling with that much power, but he didnt drive it on the street like that.
tomz28 07-24-2011, 12:36 PM well i built my trans and have it back in. feels GREAT for sure. can wait for my next pull
tomz28 08-06-2011, 10:36 AM well did a pull the other day. trans felt good and the truck drove nice and staight. no TQ steer at all. but i need a better hicth that is taller. and i was thinking about putting 2 inch blocks in the rear to help keep the rear of the truck from droping so much. any ideas???

I built suspension stops out of square tubing. The brackets stay on the frame at all time, the blocks are held into the brackets with hitch pins and have several sets of holes so i can adjust them to different heighths depending on the rules at that particular pull.
tomz28 08-06-2011, 11:44 AM cant have stops. but i dont think they will even check if i did have them. i might do that. whats the worst that could happen they tell me to take them off lol

Read the rules. ill bet you can have stops, but there is a minimum travel requirement. Thats the way 95% of the rules ive seen by sanctioning bodies read.
tomz28 08-06-2011, 01:28 PM its just a city fair pull that i won last year and now all the guys with F250s are pissed and moding anything they can to try and beat me. only thing they look at was to see if the battery was tight and how tall the hicth was LOL. i know the rules say but its what you can get away that counts lol
tomz28 09-03-2011, 12:07 PM won my city fair 2 years in a row this week. pulled 303 feet truck worked very well. and was using PPE hot+2 on level 9
mreeves23 09-04-2011, 02:12 PM Congrats on the win. Did you like pulling with the built trans over the stock trans?
tomz28 09-04-2011, 02:27 PM the whole truck worked very well from the trans to the front end parts. but the trans feels great. more power to the ground for sure
